Car Boot Threads - OS or Ebay?

The Amazon thread has been mentioned a few times. I started it in OS without even considering the ebay board because I just assumed that the ebay board dealt with just ebay. It stayed in OS for about 3 months and as it grew in length and participants it also grew further away from OS and got more sort of 'technical' so it began to suit the ebay board better, it was welcomed there and has now gone to around 2500 posts.
I still feel that the ebay (and other auctions) board is wrongly titled if it is to encompass all buying and selling activities, so my vote went to OS - but - I think that there should be a sub-board on ebay that dealt with all non internet selling, buying and giving which would include car boot sales, jumble sales, 'real' auctions, freecycle etc.0 -

I do think that a name change is needed. I hate calling it the eBay board because that makes it sound like it is just for eBay which it's not.0 -

I agree. I think the 'auctions' bit is the misleading terms as of course we tend to talk about all selling venues, not just auctions. Amazon, which is our quickest turnover thread, isn't even an auction.

When queenie first queried my action in moving her thread to the ebay board I raised the matter with the forum team, and it's taken a while but this poll is the result of their deliberations.
The new batch of threads for this coming season have started to appear, and some older ones from last have been resurrected, and we have neither moved nor merged any in the meantime while we waited for a decision.
I still believe that the ebay board is the best home for boot sales threads and all others like it since there is a wealth of sales knowledge and experience to be mined there; from both a buyer's and a seller's point of view. Setting prices, marketing, presentation on the one hand and spotting bargains, browsing and haggling on the other.
To make my viewpoint a bit clearer... just because a thing is old does not mean that it belongs purely on Old Style. Shopping is old - and we have Shop But Don't Drop and Grabbit. Banks are old and we have a board for that. Money lending is old and we have a board for that too - in its modern guise as credit cards.
I agree entirely that boot sales and jumbles sales are old - but we have a board for buying and selling our own unwanted items and that is the ebay (& other auctions) board.
So my vote has gone for ebay.
Just to a reminder as to how old shopping is I've included one of my favourite taglines here - just coming up for its 2000th birthday:-
A woman is always buying something.

See I knew this poll was a fix, I demand more options
So if things are "old" I want them in the Silver Savers Board please but no new-fangled bread makers please only the old fashioned pressure cookers with those things on the top that bob about and make frightening noises.0 -

I think another option should be the student board!lol

LOL @wirm I would be a very mature student then
The crux of the matter to me is not a blanket choice of OS or Ebay or even a sub board on Ebay but the question posed by a thread no matter where it is first posted. If I wanted to find out about selling goods I would go to the Ebay board, if I wanted to look for odd bits of material to cover a seat cushion I would check out what the OSers had to say.
I remember a car boot sale thread in OS last year where a poster planned on sellling knives in a set which were bought to sell. As I understand it there are regulations regarding the selling of knives so to me the question would be better in the Ebay board. Similarly if people want to sell as a business either on Ebay or at a boot sale they really should be asking questions on the Tax board, yes we have one of those too
I wanted to post a large package to Pink in NI so I asked the very helpful Ebay users and quickly got the answer that going to the PO was the cheapest method and so if I see someone posing a similar question on other boards I point them to the Ebay board.
Now, Andrea what about adding markets to your poll as a lot of markets have car boot sections :rotfl:So you can buy your fruit and veg and pick up a bargain at the same time.0 -

I think thats evil (but funny):rotfl:
I think you're spot on about it being 'the question that is being asked' though EdLass.
Oh, and I think Wirm is right about the vote recieving more for OS just because this thread is in OS.Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...0
