Car Boot Threads - OS or Ebay?

  • The thing is, I think car boots is a very narrow subject for a dedicated board of its own and if it's going to be a sub-board, again there's the question of which board would it be a sub-board of? We'd have this whole debate all over again..

Keep thinking though, my thinking cap's still on :)

Andrea, since the fastest moving thread on the ebay board isn't actually an auction thread, but about selling on Amazon how about a slight name change for the board?

I can't think of something snappy, but how about something like 'ebay (and other selling venues) board? That would encompass the existing Amazon thread, plus all car boot selling threads and jumble sales etc.

Some of the questions from newer members on the ebay board tend to be about where to sell, and whether ebay has any advantage over car boots, or vice versa, so we are already talking about them all over there anyway.

Interesting. That's a good point (the one about the selling on Amazon thread).

I reckon thats a really good idea :D

I've voted Ebay board - although I can understand why the name of the board may 'put people off' (not sure how/why though).

Selling or buying - I'm not sure if it makes much difference. If you put it all on the one board then buyers/sellers will both be giving opinions/ideas and more will be gained.
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...

Something Queenie said on the other thread about this has made me have a rethink.

I was looking at the ebay board as merely for info on ebay (and other auctions) for selling, but of course we get as many, if not more questions about buying than we do about selling. So, if that is the logical board for all selling *and buying* for ordinary people, as opposed to shops, then possibly a car boot sub heading on that board might be appropriate for both sides of the discussion?

At the moment we have car boot threads all over the place, what we need to ask is, if you had a question about buying or selling at a car boot sale where would you look first? If you just wanted to talk generally about your finds at a car boot sale or where it is on a map that would be different, but if I wanted to know how to sell, or what was worth buying I would try the ebay board first.

Haven't voted yet soolin, but I know there's some people that are really anti-eBay. I was until I read all the help that was given out.
  • I think you're right Soo, in that it's down to individual perception. At the moment if I were looking for threads about Car boot sales or jumble sales I'd automatically go to the OS board but, as you say, that may be different if we had a car boot sub-board under the eBay board.

    Blimey, this is really difficult...

    Yes! :T

I think predominantly, Ebay (Amazon/Auctions) are discussion *making* money. #1 and #3

But when it comes to OS'ers (IMO) we're looking at the first half of #2 (although last year questions were asked about where they are on )

As I said before, to an OS'er, a carboot is merely a modern version of the humble jumble. A money *saving* and item utilising aspect as opposed to a money making one.

Don't mean to sound agressive but how about trusting posters to use thier initativae & leaving these sorts of posts where they are started? If a poster is a natural OS'er & in the OS mindset then they will probably start it on OS where like-minded people respond in a recognized & familar format. If not then they are probably more likely to go to the ebay board.
Personally, I tend to think of the ebay board, where the regular posters have always been very helpful to me, as being for more techinical issues & tactics related to online buying & selling rather than the car-boot sale free- for-all which really is a entirely different kettle of fish (and nothing more than the modern take on an OS jumble sale IMHO)
Hope this doesn't offend Andrea as it is comming across as agressive when that really is not my intention, I just sometimes find it very patronising the way posts are abruptly moved around, especially when some posters are regulars to only one or 2 boards & are looking for responses from like-minded & familar names that they trust.

(:grouphug:Andrea, don't want you to think I am having a go at you personally:o)

May I just take the opportunity to Thank Andrea for putting up the poll?

The thing is, without it, we wouldn't be able to have the discussion and share our thoughts on the subject and I am particularly grateful for that and the interesting points of views raised.

The good thing about discussing it, is that it broadens the mind and will hopefully bring clarity and the consistency that we all wish for.

If MSE members are clearer on that subject then it can only benefit the whole boards but also make the Board Guides workload easier and more clean cut.

    Thank you Andrea.
