Car Boot Threads - OS or Ebay?

  • That doesn't sound agressive to me at all Lillibet. I figured this is an issue that's going to carry on being an issue if it's not discussed in a friendly way with all views being aired.

One thing we do ask BGs is that where possible if someone (particularly a forum regular) has posted something on a particular board then usually they've posted it there for a reason and it should be left.

However, we also ask BGs that if they see a thread that isn't getting many responses or isn't getting the OP relevant replies that they move it somewhere where the OP will get a better response.

As you can probably imagine, in some cases these conflict so the BGs are stuck between a rock and a hard place and they're often damned if they do and damned if they don't!! :(

If the BG's know that Andrea, then why was my Wish List thread moved within 5 minutes of posting?

  • Probably for exactly that second reason Queenie - whoever moved it probably thought it would get a better response elsewhere. That's what I mean - it's hard for BGs to know in some cases which of those points to go with.

I'd expect, though, that if someone on here disagrees with the way something's been done they can chat about it nicely like we've been doing here and come to some sort of compromise :)

    what constitutes a regular?
I know I'm not one, but when will I be?
at the moment threads I start get merged with others even if they are asking different things, where others start threads and the BG will say theres another thread here asking the same thing, link to it and not merge,
will it be different if i'm a regular and at what point do I become one?

I did try talking to the BG concerned Andrea - nicely, politely (I still have copies of the PM's) and I was told that if I had any further comments, queries to take them to Abuse; that didn't seem much of a compromise or friendly. :(:(

I think they need a section all on their own. Someone who likes car boots/jumble sales may not necessarily also be OS or into ebay.

  • Hi Ladygrey, welcome to the site :)

As we have nigh on 40 BGs helping us on the forum there's no way all BGs are going to do things in exactly the same way. In addition to that, often whether a BG chooses to merge threads or to simply lock and link to a different one depends on the situation at the time.

In particular, we've asked BGs not to merge threads that have been started by a member of the MSE Team or that have been in the email and have the Email tip graphic in them as this can break the link.

I'm afraid there's a whole load of stuff we've asked BGs to do or not to do on the forums. It's just that you as forum users only get to see the outcome of that. That's why we ask them, where possible, to put standard replies in that we've given them, which say that if you have an issue with it (and you 've not been able to resolve it with the BGs) you email the forum team to ask :)

Carrying on from my reply to Ladygrey, we've given the BGs a set of standard phrases to post on the forum and to send in pm's when their actions are questioned. The aim was that these were a nice way of letting forum users know why something's been done in a particular way but unfortunately in some situations if the issue hasn't been resolved between you then they can be taken as being uncompromising.

I think if there are other similar issues, like the car boot/charity shop/jumble sale one where people have differing opinions a poll would be a really useful way of gauging people's opinions. What do you think? :)

  • At the risk of doing a three in a row on this thread... :D

Can I just add, from the few threads I've read on the OS board, I think there's a great community of people on here all helping each other out in a really friendly way, which is exactly what the whole forum should be about. I'd really hate to see that change at all just because people disagree on something, like this, that can easily be resolved by a bit of friendly discussion :)
