My son's insurance last year was £1950 with Direct Line for a R reg rover 114 GSI - he was 17 with a provisional license - this year it is £750 with Barclays of all companies.Got quote through MSE link on motor insurance.
  • Hmm, thing is somebody has to drive the car before then as it has to be taken in for some repairs.
So perhaps if I search for the cover to start on Monday it will let me put in her real date of birth? Plus another prob I had whist looking was that I didn't seem to be able to put in that she had a provisional licence. I'll try it anyway.

 The Best thing to do is ring your local insurance broker, they will give you the best advice and maybe the best price

My son was 17 in February & has a provisional licence. He's had a few lessons with an instructor. I've waited to add him to my insurance as it's due in June and to make sure he had a few lessons first. Thinking of my poor clutch and no duel controls & my grey hairs!

The quotes I'm getting back are vary by about £500 !!! So shop around.

I have a 7 year old peugeot 106 1.1 engine but I live near London.

My best so far is just shy of £500 is with: i4m.co.uk - the worst is £1200 almost the value of the car!

Or use the search insuresupermarket with this site.

However I found many returned that they just would not cover or had no cover for provisional, or under 25, or under 21, etc etc

I'm saving the quotes to have a think [he's paying the difference of adding him on] they seem to be able to hold a quote for about 30 days usually.

For quote purposes change her date of birth to make her 17 now but just remember to correct if you proceed with it.

  • Thanks everyone. TBH I hadn't thought of changing her birthday by a few days on the quote but I did try it making her a year older, don't think it produced a very accurate result.
We have got a decent broker locally who I have used before - not for a while now as I always go through the links on this site - so I think I'll try them again. When my daughter tried for herself a while ago the quotes were astronomical, of course she was trying Sheila's Wheels and Diamond and anything else advertised on TV as having cheap insurance for women!

We've got both daughters on my oh's insurance (Privilege). One is 22, a student and passed her test in Sept 2004, the other is 19, a student and has a provisional licence. Granted his car is a 1991 Polo, he is paying £393 to cover the three of them fully comp with no claim discount protection and motor legal protection. After shopping around when his insurance was due for renewal, this was the best we could get. Btw, I'm with Sheila's Wheels and that was the best I could get (£100 cheaper than my renewal quote);) . Good luck in your search.
  • Have now done a search and the cheapest she could get in her own name is just under £1000 on a 1994 metro worth peanuts (although I realise that doesn't really make much difference). She is feeling really despondent about it and really wants her own insurance so she can build up her no claims. It is her own car too which will mean we are a 3 adults and 3 car family so it would be difficult to say she wasn't the main driver.
  • sorry, forgot to say I pretended it was her birthday yesterday so she would be 17
  • I've just had a quote off Tesco which came out at £669 third party with her as the sole driver which sounds pretty good to me. Tesco was recommended to me by someone so they may be good across the board for young drivers.

Also remember that with Direct Line a named driver gains their own NCD too - probably only DL will recognise it in year 1 of them having their own policy afterwards but after than any other insurer wont be able to tell the difference.

Wouldnt be surprised if other members of the RBS Group of insurers dont start offering the same before too long.
