Just be careful about what you tell insurers about the use of the younger driver. If you put that the "mum, dad grandparent" is the main user and they are not, the insurers may make further enquiries in the event of an accident. You may think that they may not find out but I have known insurers to knock on your next door neighbours to ask who the car outside belongs in a seemingly innocent question (just hit it, want to buy it ) and the neighbour answers young John next door etc. Without too much difficulty they can establish who the main user is and maybe refuse a claim if there is a false declaration on the proposal form.
Insurers tend not to ask too many questions when you want to give them money but will almost certainly be a little more inquisitive when you want money off them
  • I am 21 years old and started driving when I was 19.

I found that by taking a Pass Plus driving course (1 day - 6 hours of driving or thereabouts and around £100 +) I could DRAMATICALLY reduce my insurance premiums.
For example, on my 1996 'P' reg 1.2L Vauxhall Corsa with Norwich Union and my pass plus my quote went from being £1200 for my first year WITHOUT a pass plus certificate to £620 WITH the pass plus certificate.
    My 2nd year was £520.
My 3rd year is just £300 with 2 years no claims discount, free legal expenses, £135 excess and cover to drive other cars if necessary. That is with Quinn Direct via https://www.confused.com.

This is based upon 3rd party fire and theft which is advisable for younger drivers in my opnion.

Use example registration numbers to get an idea as to whether or not Pass Plus will make a difference to you.

Hi - if this is for your daughter worth trying youngladydriver or dna insurance or if it's your son who has turned 17 try quinn direct.Keep to a small car 1.1 litres max.See if pass plus gives a substantial saving. It costs around £100 in extra lessons but can save a good deal morein insurance premiums.Include mum or older female family member as a driver.

DD got her first policy from Tesco for £800 inc breakdown cover on the day she passed her test aged 17, second year went to under £600. DS paid £1500 with Norwich Union at 18 and they wanted over £1000 last year but he got it down to £800..this year it is under £500, he is now 20.

Obviously depends on the car, the age and sex of the driver good luck.
