eCarinsurance quoted £888. I don't understand how all these companies who other young people have had great deals from are always rubbish for me?

Variables like the area you live in can't affect a price that much can it?

    I only drive a 1.1!

Personal stats like your gender and age are also a factor: when you reach 21 you should see a drop in your premium, and another drop once you turn 25 (depending on claims).

I think it's the same for all young drivers, I started off paying £1,000 tpft for a 1 litre (in fact I think it was 990cc) Ford Fiesta that was over ten years old. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and pay.

I've also seen people point out https://www.quidco.com which pays you cashback when you purchase various items (insurance included) through links on their website. Companies such as the Post Office are on there. Worth a try anyway.

    Best of luck! ;)

I'd definately say call around lots of co's rather than do it online. Call as many 0800 no's as your patience allows. I always play each co off against eachother. i.e Co A quotes £300 so I tell Co B my cheapest quote is £280, they either match it or usually beat it. Then go to Co C and do the same. If you do it online you can't do this. I do it each year for 2 cars and a bike and can always beat any online quote. I got my list of 20-30 numbers from the yellow pages.

Just recieved my renewal form from norwich - £881.99!!!

I've already had one from quinn direct for over £100 cheaper!
I can't understand how they charge extra for existing customers to renew than to have a new customer start a policy? Surely it should be the other way round, rewarding your loyalty?

They charged me about £650 when I did a new quote online...

Admittedly I was older (about 22), but when I bought my first car, Royal & Sun Alliance was the cheapest for me. They may be worth a try. Axa offered me the cheapest deal on my first renewal.

I am sorry it's so expensive for you to insure yourself, but you have little option but to pay up and be assured that the cost will fall as you age. It's one of the few compensations!

Don't be afraid to ask whether they do discounts for online or phone purchase: sometimes, you'd be surprised! If you are a member of a trade union, you may be able to get a discount through a union deal.
Mortgage at outset (May 2004): £80,000
    Mortgage now (October 2007): £58,000
    Original mortgage-free date: May 2024
    Expected mortgage-free date: December 2014
    Projected interest saving: £21,100

Before you take up a cheaper quote I'd call your existing ins co and tell them you have found cheaper but would like to give them chance to match or better it. It sometimes works but not always.

Just had a quote from RAC, £695!!!

Only £120 excess as opposed to norwich's £220
Enhanced courtesy car as opposed to norwich's standard.

And £200 cheaper! Wow. I'm gonna try a few others yet though. Swinton, direct line, etc. And when I get the cheapest I'm gonna ring norwich and see what they say. Muhahaha

Whoever would have though that car insurance could be so much fun lol

When you call around take a few quid off the £695 quote. Say £680. That way they might better it and you''ve got an even better deal :D Don't go too low though as they won't try to beat it.

My 22yo son just bought his first car (1.6 Ford Focus). He went with Elephant. His is £500something (can't remember exact amount). This is £100 cheaper than what he was going to be if he didn't put us (me and his dad) on as named drivers. He is named as the main driver.

Have you got a parent you can add too? I stress that this insurance is in his name, we are only named drivers. We didn't take it out for him.
