    some people make me LOL

    i work for m&s

we (staff) have been joking all week. the stuff for 1p is a load of rubbish (i.e. stuff that was identifiied as the LOWEST SELLERS - or at least one of the lowest).
we even joked that people will think everything is 1p. but we had phone calls from people thinking everything was 1p. they thought they were gonna fill a trolly up of dresses/jackets etc for 50p LOL.

also the idea of this is that people make a donation to the charity. but i can guarentee that 95% didnt and 95% of the 5% made less than £1. its a sorry sight to see.

as for queing for it - that actually made me laugh out loud....its a load of rubbish to get you in and if you bought 1 full price item theyve got you hahaha

Its nice to know M&S employ these types of people. Perhaps you are working for the wrong employer!

I think the reasons behind this promotion are pretty obvious to everyone so why be so negative.
  • Crawley was a bit of a con. Consists of one small table of items, and only available to buy from in the morning.

I agree , they said the purse and knickers are arriving tomorrow  sweets are nice tho :p

Fortunately I don't think this is the norm as I've always had very good service from Marks SA's even under extreme duress such as at 10.00 pm on the first 20% day last Christmas and indeed again today. They make shopping in Marks a pleasure and did today with lots of chat while queuing and helpful staff once you got to the tables.

Thanks Edibburghlass. I really enjoyed today, and completely applaud M&S for what they are trying to achieve. Hopefully the charity donations will exceed their costs and make everything worthwhile.

I don't really see why anyone can complain about what they received either - it was all free!!
  • I enjoyed today as well. Had a nice chat with people in queue too.

I work for M&S but only as a regular customer assistant. I think people need to bear in mind that this is the first time they have done anything like this, some mistakes may have been made but it wasn't intentional. On other busy days such as people collecting food orders on Christmas Eve our shop runs like a well oiled machine, the staff do the same thing every year and everything is planned for, no one knew what the reaction to this event would be.

The branch I'm at is one of their smaller branches and despite opening at 9am people started queuing before 7am! By 8.30am the queue was sizeable and by 9am huge. That took us all by surpirse, but there were plenty of extra staff around and everyone was doing their best to give customers a pleasant experience.

2 million items given away and using the event to collect for charity...I can't think of another retailer that has come anywhere close to doing something similar.

Thats more like the kind of attitude I've come to enjoy at M&S :T

I work for the charity that one of the branches is collecting for. And I went along today to show my face! :D

A lot of retired staff had voluntered to come and help out, the vibe of the whole affair was lovely. The queuing was round the block! The staff managed the public really well, made sure people didn't take the micky, everyone who queued got a selection of 5 items for 5 p and a free scratch card. Of course a lot of items had gone after a couple of hours but the staff were telling the people queueing so at least they were aware.

It was a bit of an eye opener collecting thru, some people (esp Women in their 40's!) tried to not pay at all, (as you had to put money in the bucket) 5p! The staff were lovely, really polite but you still had your chancers, people moaning that they had lost their place in the queue.....

Only thing they overlooked was that, as there are several doors to the M&S that people were aware that there was only one queue. However, it was hard to miss as it went all the way down the street....

Amazing who gives money thou, people dressed smartly would only give 1p and others who obviously could do with the money gave £5.00. I wanted to run up to him and return it to him. :o

The staff worked their socks off, and tomorrow, I too may queue up and buy some of those lovely sour apple sweets and a scarf pin! :p
But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more

I arrived too late to get anything today (9.20am), the staff were great telling people that if you were behind a certain point there wouldn't be anything for you. The staff were all bright and cheerful. I got nothing and really don't mind.

Well done to everyone who did get something. I hope the charities do well out of this.

Was very proud of myself this morning for getting two kids to school and a toddler ready in time to queue at M and S for an hr ... got two packs of sweets two ginger beers and a mug... on reflection ...the extra time at the breakfast table would have been appreciated better.
