Car Scrappage Scheme

What a wonderful idea (sorry i can't help being sarcastic) suddenly the people who own 10 year old cars like me will get a lovely £2000 off a new car - very nice who is going to pay the rest, because I expect that like me anyone driving a 10 year old car can't afford a new car whether it has 2k off or not. I think Gordon Brown should crawl under a rock and stay ther for a very long time
My DS collected his Hyundai i10 today (under the scrappage scheme) He traded in a 10 yr old Micra which needed about £700 of welding and other work to pass the next MOT. He paid for it in full from his savings
For the record, he ordered on 2/05/09 and car was ready for collection on 18/06/09. The delay in collecting it was caused by the dealer informing him that a 3% charge would be made if he paid by credit card - so he waited until he could access his ISA. Shame he couldn't get the extra ISA interest through using the credit card though
He is thrilled to bits with both the car and the scrappage deal. :TMurphy was an optimist!!!0 -
It looks like Volkswagen have put up their prices as I got Junes what car magazine this month the RRP on a Polo E spec 1.2L 70hp was £9360 just went to the dealer today to find the RRP had changed to £9610,
He price matched the what car target price of £8949 (£661 less than RRP), but as soon as I mentioned scrappage allowance, he said he will only offer full retail not price match £9610 - £2000 = £7610,
I did a quick check on VW's used stock and they have a Polo from sept 2006 56 plate without scrappage allowance that is £6450 (£1160 less than new) and as there is no scrappage allowance they will probably drop on the price of a used Polo,
So efectively VW have now increased the price by £911, so thats their contribution to the scrappage scheme sorted,
He did say though that all Golfs/Polo's & Foxes are now all factory order as all standing stock has sold, factory orders take from 10-12 weeks for delivery,
Also mentioned was a possible £100-£200 off for waving the cash under his nose,
It looks like other manufacturers are up to the same trick.0 -
why do people assume that because youre driving a ten year old car your on your uppers! I have owned my ten year old car from new, have never replaced it because it was a perfectly good car until recently, it has now started to cost me money with various problems and an mot iminent. to sell it privatly i would have to have it repaired and all the hassle of putting it up for sale. this has given me the insentive to stop ploughing money into it and do something about it. and i will not be getting into debt to do so.ITV comp winner no 410

Is it permissable to remove parts from a car which has been sold under the scrappage scheme before it is traded in against your new one?I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not sure!0

Dont know vulcan - in theory it should be able to drive to the dealers I believe. You need to ask the scrappage team on that one. Sickening I know, as OH paid out for an expensive new cambelt only 250 miles ago.0

Same feeling here, had a 3 month old battery, wish I'd have kept the old one so I could have swopped them. I did take CD player & speakers, but I've done this on every car I've traded in anyway.Next year we'll be millionaires!0 -

I took everything i could sell out mine, but made sure it was still road legal and could get to the dealers0 -
I guess things like radios would be ok to remove - they dont count towards road worthiness0

Let's just agree that this little bit of political showmanship by the govt does benefit a small slice of the car owning population. Let's not think too hard about the big benefits UK PLC could have had if the same taxpayer's money had bee targeted more thoughtfully on real economy-stoking measures.
The thing is that without the scrappage deal i would not have bought a new car. So far as the Government goes on the £5k i10 i am purchasing they are getting £650 VAT back off me straight away.
When you look at this way the £350m budget will be offset quite considerably by the extra revenue.0 -

How I loathe people saying 'UK PLC'. I know the government would like to own us, but I see no percentage in playing into their beastly hands!0
