Do you reckon theyve made a mistake there :D - I mean that much off would have been headline news surely? No, looks like its meant! Amazing, wish I wanted one :)
  • I ordered a new i10 on 18.5. Current tax expires 30.6.09, insurance and mot both expire 28.6.09. Dealers are insisting that my scrap car must be taxed at the point of scrapping. Delivery not expected until July. Are they giving me duff information?
Was going to tax car for 6 months and park on the drive but directgov will not allow me to tax it as the insurance/mot will have expired before the new disc starts

Send an email to the scrappage team asking your question and then use their reply to show your dealer.

This is the reply I got when I asked them about OH's car which he wants to use for scrappage but rarely drives, it is MOTd, taxed and insured at the moment. I wanted to know whether I could get a tax refund once I had ordered the new car. The dealer said I couldnt because then Id have to declare SORN and SORN cars arent allowed. Anyway, here is the answer plus the email for the scrappage team:
Thank you very much for your query.
Can you please note the following:
    • the old car must have a current MOT test certificate, or one that has expired no more than 14 days before the order for a new vehicle is place
    • the 14 days also applies to tax
    • the old car must be insured at the time the new car is ordered
Once you have ordered your car, you should SORN your vehicle if it is going to be more than 14 days between the expiry of the MOT and the delivery of the new vehicle. Once you make a SORN you must keep your vehicle off the public road as you will be committing an offence if it is used or parked on the public road. You will need to make arrangements with the dealer for your old car to be picked up once the new one is delivered.
    Kind regards

The rules of the scrappage scheme.

    • be registered in United Kingdom on or before 31 August 1999
    • be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) or Driver and Vehicle Agency in Northern Ireland (DVA) in your name
    • have been registered to you continuously for 12 calendar months before the order date of the new vehicle
    • have a UK address on the registration certificate (V5C)
    • have a current MOT test certificate before the date of order for the new vehicle (or within 14 days of expiry at the time of order)
    • have a current tax disc before the date of order for the new vehicle (or within 14 days of expiry at the time of order)
    • be insured when the order for the new vehicle is placed
    The new vehicle

The new vehicle you want to buy must be:

Part of the problem is the dealers don't really know and implied that the rules changed. I have e-mailed BERR the other day and they have not yet got back to me.

I think what clouds the issue is the following, taken from the Hyundai website

The old vehicle must have a current tax disc. The purchaser must provide an MOT certificate for it which is current at or which expired no more than 14 days before the date of ordering, or a current Hackney Carriage Licence.

I think the fact that it specifically mentions the MOT at the date of ordering and merely mentions current tax disc, with no mention of tax at the point of ordering, this is causing problems.

I was wondering if I was able to get this scheme - I have an early 90's car that I have owned since new, it is not taxed,Mot'ed or insured but is sorned. the only thing is I have allowed some kids to dismantle it - I have all the parts and would be happy for it to be taken and scrapped?

I would say the answer is a clear no sorry, as you have to have a current MOT test certificate before the date of order for the new vehicle (or within 14 days of expiry at the time of order) and have a current tax disc before the date of order for the new vehicle (or within 14 days of expiry at the time of order) and be insured when the order for the new vehicle is placed.

LOL - well if the kids can reassemble it, take it through an MOT and tax and insure it youll be fine - otherwise, no its not going to be eligible.

Well the above is taken from the BERR site and my email further up is from the scrappage team - both say that MOT, Tax and insurance is necessary AT THE TIME OF ORDER. You can see on the email they sent me that they actually say I can SORN the car once the order has been placed. The horses mouth is saying that tax and MOT can have lapsed 14 days at the time of the order, so therefore having it right up to scrappage is not necessary.

I think this is a little light-hearted joke from the OP. Nice one! You've made me smile, so thanks.
