Car Scrappage Scheme

I've been reading around that the scheme doesn't work with cars that are SORN. I had a vehicle that didn't pass an MOT test in April, with a repair bill that was more than the cars value (Ford Escort Si) so I declared it SORN and was hoping to use it for the government scheme.
To actually use the scheme though now, will I have to pay the repair and tax disc just to be able to use it? I guess £2000 is still more compared to the vehicle repairs and tax disc minus tax disc refund, so I'd still benefit, but if this is true, isn't this a hassle? It it really really worth it or should I just buy a 1 year old second hand car?0 -

How much is the escort going to cost to fix? As it's going to be scrapped aren't there any shortcuts you could do, just to scrape it through? Have you shopped around much?Next year we'll be millionaires!0 -
It does seem ridiculous to pay out for the repairs when the car is going to be scrapped doesnt it. I guess we were lucky that we still had an MOT and insurance on the car and just had to retax it. (Still arguing the toss with the dealer over the fact tax disc only needed at time of order - he reckoned has to stay on til scrapped - Ive had email from the scrappage team this isnt so, it can be SORNED once the order has been made).
I guess only you know how much the repairs will cost and whether it makes sense to tax, insure and MOT the vehicle to get the scrappage £2k. Have a look at other schemes for pre reg vehicles which arent eligible for scrappage, it may be you get a bargain with them. Try some of the car broker sites0 -
Been looking at the C30 from Volvo and the scrappage allowance. Does anyone who has taken advantage of this, know if it is only available if you are taking out the finance? If so they seem to claw back 2 grand (or so) of the savings in interest.0

I dont think they can make you take their finance Chris. Give them a ring to ask for the latest offers.0

I haven't used finance to buy my picanto, thought maybe there would be a problem doing this but the dealer didn't comment when i said i wouldn't requiring their financeITV comp winner no 410

The “clunkers” program may add to quarterly sales at an annualized rate of 1 million to 1.5 million vehicles, Brian Johnson, a Barclays Capital analyst, said in a June 12 report.
Consumers would get $4,500 vouchers if the new car they are buying gets 10 miles-a-gallon better gas mileage than the model they are trading in. For light trucks, the improvement must be 5 mpg better than the older model.
For a $3,500 voucher, the improvement for cars must be 4 mpg or better, and for light trucks, 2 mpg. The trade-in vehicle must be no older than a 1984 model and get 18 mpg or less in combined city/highway fuel economy.
New passenger cars purchased with the vouchers must get at least 22 mpg in city/highway fuel economy, and light trucks must get at least 18 mpg. Domestic as well as foreign models sold in the U.S. qualify.
Money will be sourced from a larger budget deficit0 -

The repair costs are estimated to be around £400. I've looked on the internet that the car is worth about £150 though mine is probably worth much more less too. After that, I've got to pay £180 odd for that tax disc though I guess we'll still have the refund to that. Still, it's such a dumb idea and hassle. Can an MOT tester be bribed to pass it? lol0 -
Id ask the MOT bloke - if you are friendly with him - whether all the repairs are essential as you are going to scrap the car or whether more minor ones would get you through? Worth trying anyway. Or worth finding out if anyone can do the repairs much cheaper - using second hand parts or something?
The tax disc, youd only pay for the 6 months one and then get the refund after you have ordered the new car.0 -
