Nice to see how this UK Taxpayer funded scheme is benefiting manufacturing jobs in Germany (see above about VW Flying), now that the German Govt is scheduled to shut Vauxhall UK down. THANKS Gordon for your leadership!

Oh well I did at least buy a car built in the UK

Though they shouldn't be trying to pass this off as a green initiative rather than an economy boost either as I'm taking a 1.4 off the road and putting a 2.2 on. Though it is diesel.

I managed to get a good deal on a Yaris with the scrappage scheme. I'm picking up a 1.33 TR 5 door later on tonight for £8,500 which is £3,300 off the list price.

Long story short the salesman didn't want to give me it for that price and offered me the car for £10,500 without scrappage. When I went back later the finance man wrote the order form out at £10,500 minus £2,000. The original offer was £9,110 with the scrappage so I got an extra £600 off.

I just came on here to figure out if I could take the tax disc away with me when I scrap my Starlet later and it seems as though it's a bit hit and miss about whether I can. I'll give it a go and let you know how I get on.

Of course you can, it is your property, you are the only person that can get a refund on it.

    It's not hit and miss.

Drive away your new car with your old tax disc in your pocket,it's what I did and many others.

You then need to stick it to form V14 and send it to Swansea for a refund of any full months.

    Download the form here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012526

Make sure you get it in the post before the end of the month or you will lose June.

i've been 'uuuming & aaarhing' for a few weeks now whether to buy a new Fiat 500, and when this scheme was announced, i thought this would be a great opportunity to trade in my old Fiesta which is on its last legs.

    but no...................

apparently Fiat have decided that as the 500 is such a good selling model they are not subscribing to this scheme. To add insult to injury, i was offered a paultry £250 off the showroom price of £11,300 - its not exactly a cheap car either !

seems i can only get this deal off either expensive cars or rubbish models that no one would want. Doesnt seem as though a lot of liason went on with the manufacturers before this scheme was announced.

WILL BE WRITING TO MY MP AND OTHERS TO HIGHLIGHT !!

Not quite right Heather - Firstly the deal is on all fiat cars. Secondly however whilst the interest rate ranges between 6.6% and 8.0% approx for any normal deal the scrappage scheme deal interest rate is 11.4% approx. Therefore - either buy cash or buyer beware. Martin should warn people about this hidden rate and is it legal I wonder. Something the government obviously did not ensure happened when striking their own deal with the manufacturers.

Is that the only reason?...surely it can be transported legally to the dealer without tax.

yes it can but dealers will be taking in huge no's of these scrappers that need to be scrapped quickly, hiring transporters to keep moving them won't be an option as the cost is enormous, so they need to have some tax on them to drive them where necessary and get them out of their compounds quickly. Imagine September with dealers getting hundreds of new Sep plate cars out and taking in similar no's of scrappers...they need to be able to move them around fast and if they can get them to a local approved scrapper quicklly they'll drive them. You're getting a great deal, why the issue about leaving it with a bit of tax on it?
The cars need to be roadworthy and legal all the way to the scrapyard.

It doesn't say that on the .gov website.

That looks like the dealers are making up the rules to suit themselves.

Part of the Furniture 10,000 Posts Combo Breaker Car Insurance Carver!
As you need to get your car to the dealership..it needs tax..you can't drive without it!
    !

BUT DD, you also need an MOT to drive legally and all the dealers are saying only necessary at time of order! And what about insurance?

My car is being taken away by the breakers as the dealer is over 100 miles and there is no way Im driving it there.

Well great deal or not (it's a great deal for the dealer too) I'd prefer any bit of Tax money back in my pocket that anyone elses. Anyway it appears people are leaving the dealer with their tax disc anyway so it's not about the dealer getting it from their garage to a scrapper. Could the dealer use dealer plates to transport it?

Also I'd have thought scrapyards would be fighting over these so will collect? Or can the parts not be 'salvaged'?

. You're getting a great deal, why the issue about leaving it with a bit of tax on it?

Because that was never part of the deal, reputable dealers have trade plates to move untaxed vehicles anyway, the tax disc was paid for by the customer and it is their property.
