I think with most of us, this is probably the first new car weve had so anything seems brilliant when its new :)

You could have got the car much the same price before scrappage with a little haggling and the proceeds of selling or scrapping your own car. The scrappage £2k off isn't that great a deal. Goes to show how a little hype can get people rushing off to get loans and buying things they wouldn't ordinarily.

I probably would only have got about £500 for the car I'm scrapping. Minus autotrader costs. So I'm certainly getting more than £1500 'bonus'. However when I went in to buy the new car I knew they were giving discounts before the scrappage scheme anyway and let them know I would walk away and use a broker so I got a further £2k. I also bought a model that had 0% finance.

I've ended up with a decent deal but it took a couple of hours haggling. If you don't get further discount on top of your scrappage then the winner is generally the dealer.

Try getting a Huyundi i10 or i20 with £2000 off without scrappage......i think a lot of people are a bit miffed that they havent got a qualifying banger.....i know i am!

I think you need to give people a bit more credit :) Ive ended up with £5k off the car Im buying. £2k for a car worth about £300 and the rest from haggling/going through a broker. We arent all daft as brushes. The scheme has just given a lot of us the incentive to get a new car for the first time.

The little really inexpensive cars like the Hyundais certainly wouldnt have had a margin big enough to haggle £2k off.
  • The deals really do depend on the brand...some dealers and brands are able to combine most existing discounts with scrappage, others aren't - simply down to how their agrrements on margins with the manuf'rs are structured.
We have a number of brands where the dealers are combining good discounts still with scrappage, and as a result this is the busiest we've been since the new March plates, we've even got a temp in covering our phones to give us some breathing space today so we can get through the backlog of enquiries...so there is no doubt the scheme is genuinely good for a lot of people. ..especially on key brands like VW (as it gives you a staright £2k off plus the dealer's own discount on Golf...so they are flying!), Ford, Audi etc

Cor didnt know a broker was on here :) I had a good deal through carfile on the VW Golf Plus new model - 10 weeks wait though - is that general? Also, in your professional opinion, would it make any great difference waiting til 1 September to get the 59 plate?

Oh and can you tell us why the tax disc needs to stay on til the car is supplied whilst the MOT only needs to be valid for the order date please?

Nice to see how this UK Taxpayer funded scheme is benefiting manufacturing jobs in Germany (see above about VW Flying), now that the German Govt is scheduled to shut Vauxhall UK down. THANKS Gordon for your leadership!

Well, it would have made sense for them to use the scrappage scheme solely for cars built in this country wouldnt it.

Yes, the new Golf Plus has only just been launched so you need to order it, the leadtime advice VW were giving their dealers last week on that model was 14 weeks...so you may get a 59 anyway!!
As you need to get your car to the dealership..it needs tax..you can't drive without it!

    !

Is that the only reason?...surely it can be transported legally to the dealer without tax.
