Has anyone had any luck with VW? My local dealer has a special offer on a passat estate that is new but they will not confirm what the scrappage allowance will be on it.

From what I understand the £2000 scrappage allowance is off the list price of the vehicle. So any other discounts wont apply. I think it's one or the other, can't have both. If you just do a search on web, it will bring up loads of info from the news and things.

I went into a Kia dealership two days ago and was told that a new box standard Picanto in a solid paint(£360 extra for metallic), would cost £4195 otr, went on the Kia website last night and the price has increased to £4495 otr.....so now the discount is not £2000, but £1700. I'm just wandering is this offer going to shrink even more before the scheme finishes!

What is the point in having to waste money/time/effort in getting an MOT then taxing a car just to scrap it....sheer and utter lunacy.

    Dunno.
    Your probably right.
It's probably a scenario they didn't think through properly.
But given that we're stuck with it then you have to weigh up the costs against the potential savings.
I don't think tax is a huge cost as you can get a refund for unused months.
MOT could be a huge cost, but remember if it's not actually going on the road you only need to do the absolute minimum e.g. you could use exhaust bandages rather than replace an exhaust.

I understand your frustration, but if there is something you can't change then you need to be pragmatic and look at the options.

    You're probably right.
But bear in mind that prices might have had to have risen anyway due to the near breaking point on the industry.

You are almost certainly right that the timing is related to the car scrappage scheme but you have to bear in mind that the £ is 30% down against the Euro (we import a lot of related items) and that the industry is at breaking point and desperately needs price rises.

The timing is almost certainly not coincidental, but I would argue that rises were on the cards sooner rather than later.
Understanbd the cynicism about the scheme though.

Im in a similar situation with VW, the salesman has utterly refused to discount the list price at all, though he said he would throw in the scotchguarding. Ive tried some brokers who are offering up to 10% off the list price plus the scrappage deal. Im just a bit nervous of using them.

Im also a bit concerned that some VW dealers have said to me that the scrappage deal has to be done and dusted within 12 weeks of order and currently some VW models are months more on a waiting list.

    4. The old vehicle must have a current tax disc. The purchaser must provide an MOT certificate for it which is current at or which expired no more than 14 days before the date of ordering, or a current Hackney Carriage Licence. The purchaser must also provide the V5C Registration Certificate for it, and may be required to provide proof of identity and address. The old vehicle must not be an insurance write-off or subject to any financing arrangement.

As I read it this gives you 14 days from the expiry of your MOT to order a new car.

    Hi (again) folks.

my old car's MOT ran out on the 12th May, so I was going to get it MOT'd before ordering a new car with the scrappage scheme. Now reading above, if I order my new car before 14 days from the 12th (so befor Monday) then I won't need an MOT?

I can't find any other information about this 14 day 'grace' period anywhere else on the internet? is there a link?

    thanks:D

If the MOT has expired though, how do you legally get the car to the dealer?

Well when/if I order a new car, all I will need is my V5 and MOT cert. As for getting my car to the dealer, I'll either have to get it towed, or see if the dealer will collect. why?

The dealer or the scrap yard collect it on a car transporter.
