Hi
I (hopefully) will be collecting my new Skoda Fabia on Tuesday and am trying to sort my insurance out and have come up with many queries. Buying insurance is one of those things that gets me really worked up as find it so confusing anyway. After trying to get lots of quotes yesterday, every site I visited ended up with not giving me a quote because of problems with the site, leading to me either not being able to complete my details or completing them and technical faults. Successfully quoted from comparison sites, just those through cashback sites were problems or even directly. Anyway, sorry for babbling. My main issues are:
I traded in my 10 year old Polo and have one month left on the policy. It doesn't make sense to me to pay an adjustment fee to change my details over so thought I would just leave it to run whilst getting a new policy for my new car (with a different provider). Am I allowed to do this in terms of benefiting from the no claims?. The reason I ask is that whilst researching online yesterday about other queries I came across one insurer that states can't benefit from no claims if already have a policy with no claims (don't get why that would be anyway but if car is scrapped wonder if that rule applies).
Next question re modifications - I have chosen metallic grey. Is that a modification? Might seem a daft question but on one quote I accidentally selected car modified and then a list of modifications appeared and one of them was paintwork. As metallic isn't standard I don't know whether should declare this. Difference of around £25-£30. Worried if I don't my policy will be invalid.
Also when it comes to the car's value do I just put recommended price all all the extras I have like air conditioning and central locking and metallic which adds up to another grand?
Anyone who has come across these issues themselves would appreciate some advice. Driving me nuts.
Also one thing I've noticed is that going through cashback sites isn't always cheaper. Last year getting a quote directly from provider's website was cheaper than one quoted on cashback.
Thankyou
Jules
Try confused.com, expains everything and you only have to enter your details once, have a look at your best deals and see if they are registered on quidco, hopefully you'll get lucky0 -
Hi Jules, can I ask how long you've been waiting for your car? We have also ordered a Fabia (diesel) and can't wait for it to arrive.
Hi - approx 10/11 weeks (petrol). Was going to go for Hyundai i10 which would have been available within a few days but decided to be patient. Supposed to be collecting Tuesday and dropped off my old car on Friday because the electric window got stuck so was driving with it open for a day and thought it was risky leaving it on drive,. I was told the car should have arrived then (they then needed to do locking) so that didn't sound promising. Might have to catch bus to work if not.
Must admit I'm really nervous about having new car. Passed my test 4 year's ago and have only had an old car and didn't matter as much if it was scratched or scraped - not that I'm not careful:o)0 -

Thanks - did try confused.com and comparethemarket.com and checked quidco/other cashback sites to see if registered. Always do that. My point at the end was that if I was to get quoted say £200 (lowest quote) on a comparison site I would then go to that provider via the cashback site and often it's a higher quote (presumably because they are paying cashback too). Not always though..0 -
Oh dear Jules, knickers in a twist or what :rotfl:
Firstly, always check out the price for insurance BEFORE you go to the cash back site
Yes, thanks, always do this
Modifications normally mean things like lowered suspension and so on, so no, paint colour wouldnt be a problem
That's what I thought but it was only because as I mentioned, the paintwork option was on the quote form when I selected 'yes' to modifications. I think after researching some more (although it's still not clear) that if having a respray it adds more value and makes it more attractive so more likely to get stolen (stupid I know) Will check thesequeries before I purchase but was just hoping to avoid having to ring different insurers up (probably differs between insurers).
The insurance - as you say, you are scrapping that car, so there wont be a car to claim on. Ring up and explain that to them.
Yes, will do thanks. Hopefully they will see the logic
The price would be what the car would cost WITH all the mod cons.
Thanks
Dont worry so much
Will try not to, just HATE insurance, just want to make sure everything is correct I put on form in case they invalidate it as given false info (didn't worry so much with my old car for some reason)

Hi - approx 10/11 weeks (petrol). )
 They told us six weeks (ordered two weeks ago) and I thought it sounded optimistic given every other dealer (we also looked at Hyundai, Kia etc) said it would be at least 12 weeks.
We're also nursing an old car (with a coolant leak) and praying it holds out, otherwise I'll be spending three hours a day on the bus to get to work until the new car arrives.Must admit I'm really nervous about having new car. It is a bit nerve wracking getting your first new car, and you'll probably find yourself parking miles from where you want to be to avoid other cars etc, but that soon wears off! Just enjoy it!0 -

That sounds unpleasant. My only problem with buses (apart from cost of fares) is they never turn up on time, otherwise wouldn't be so bad as bus stop bang outside my work. Hope everything runs smoothly with your new car.

I do that anyway) that may have something to do with finding parking stressful though when a car park is crowded. My life was so much easier before I learned to drive, I'm sure (just got husband to drop me off everywhere).

Honest John's column said a lot of cars certified as scrapped are actually ending up in Poland and others are being dismantled for spares.
so if Poland decides to change from driving on the right to the left we'll know why
one quote, on honest john, does not prove cars are going to Poland. and if they are, it would be in a dismantled state for reassembly, which is how cars are currently sold to Poland, so nothing out of the ordinary there
as most people say, they are actually pleased that their scrap vehicles are being recycled, rather than crushed, which is what some people wrongly took 'scrappage' to mean

perhaps they are reassembling them into LHD models0

jules99 I think the paint referred to in modifications will be custom paint ie. metal flake, flip paint or something that costs thousands of pounds, that would be difficult to match up on a damaged car. Hence would put the premium up.
My insurance didn't even class larger than standard wheels on my mini as a modification as they were fitted when the car was ordered new.
