I wish customers would stop telling me their excuses about not having bags. The number of times I've heard oh i've left them in the car. I don't really care if you don't have any bags I just want a yes or no answer so I know to give you bags or not.

Quoted for truth. And the same thing for "Do you want Active Kids vouchers?" Yes or no. Not yes or "No, I got kids but they're not active". (EDIT: It's just occurred to me why all the other cashiers call them school vouchers)

And the same thing for if you have a car park ticket, nevermind the fact that I don't know whether or not you've even driven, I am not the car park warden. I don't need to know that you forgot to get a ticket, you didn't know you had to pay on Sunday or you didn't even notice the Pay & Display signs, or that the machine is broken.

*sigh* Sorry that was off topic, just needed to get that out :p. Do we already have a working in the supermarket rant thread? I'm going to go all out once I've left.
In Sainsburys we are actually meant to ask "Do you have your own bags today?" but the number of people that find it difficult to answer that question leads to most people changing it to "do you need any bags?" which if you get a grumpy mystery customer could lead to the cashier failing.

Again quoted for truth, although I don't know if we've ever failed the mystery customer for not asking that.

As for the Mystery Customer, ... its something you should take up with your managers

As a dime a dozen cashier (i.e. a student, not a long term worker) I really don't have the slightest influence on management. And I'm in a small store where everyone knows each other, let alone a big store where I'm sure I'd have even less power.

Is that reason to blame the customer for it?

Not being funny, but what has being in your 60's got to do with it?
And if you bought £70 of shopping i think you may have wanted the items, not been worried about somone else putting them back.
Really I don't think them wanting you to recycle is cause to stop shopping there!

    Respect for elders?

There's a world of difference between a retailer wanting, indeed encouraging, it's customers to re-use bags and their staff lecturing paying customers at the checkout. It's disrespectful and out of line. I can totally understand the OP's gripe.

Is carrying a plastic bag like carrying a condom? Better to have one and not need it, than need one and not have it?
  • I don't see the problem with paying for the odd bag when I'm out. Maybe if shops decided to do a give away on the reuse-able bags then more people would be more willing to buy them.

Then again, If I can fit something into another bag then I'll tell the person behind the counter that It's fine and that I don't need one.

I think its a bit harsh when you see these people throwing insults at the cashiers, I can bet you that they don't want to be asking for your extra 1-15p It's part of their job so why give them hassle for it?

Write to head office and make the complaints to the people who sit in the offices above rather than the scapegoats doing the hard work downstairs!!

I will say it again, if you charge me for the bags, put the lot back on the shelf!

And if you're a robot that follows a script, my has seven letters and three f's

At what point did he say Sainsbury's charge for the bog standard carrier bags? They're free, that's why they're behind the till.

Are you being completely serious? You have to be a wind up.

If by script you mean the company's script, rules are rules. We have to ask if you're reusing any bags, if you have the loyalty card and a car park ticket, and those are equally for your benefit as well as ours. Are you seriously being so horrible for doing our job? If you don't like it tell the management, don't scapegoat us. But I doubt you'll find much demand in the British public for cashiers who don't remind you to use your loyalty card or get your car park ticket validated/refunded.

Otherwise what DO you mean? By "robot" do you mean ones who sound dull and robotic? I assure you that unless the cashier is making lengthy conversation with you, no matter how much it sounds like natural speech, it is all script. They have all done each possible combination of variations of what to say thousands of times before, some people just find it easier to put a smile on.

OMG Why do you need an incentive to recycle the carrier bags?
can't you just do it because it is a good thing to do?

So I take it you don't accept club card points for bringing your own bags?

I think the obvious point is that you reuse for environmental purposes. Anything else is a bonus.

Clubcard points for using a bag again do not incentivise me one bit.

I re-use bags but I'm not complaining if they incentivise it.
