Asda - carrier bags

I collect tesco clubcard points and are more than happy to use my own bags as tesco reward customers for recycling,but asda do not give any incentive whatsoever which makes me annoyed as us customers are helping the enviroment by recycling carrier bags but we are also contributing to asdas massive profits as they are not using as many bags!!!!

My mum in the 80/90's would shop at the cheapest supermarkets she could to feed a family of 5. It happens that the 2 supermarkets she shopped weekly at were Kwik Save and Aldi. My mum being mum refused to pay for carrier bags and instead saved every carrier she got and reused them. She had no concern about the environment, just to save money where possible.

Without a doubt the discounted supermarkets charged for carriers to reduce some overheads while others charged more for goods and introduced rewards instead.

I do agree with the OP to a certain extent and wouldn't appreciate being "advised" at the check out, I'm certainly not stupid.

What narks me the most is supermarkets all of a sudden have an environmental policy and consider themselves 'holier than thou' but the motivation for having them I'd be fair in saying is more so for the protection of their corporate images. Don't get me wrong any change that might reduce waste going to landfill can't be bad, but supermarket practices have a long way to go before I'll consider them worthy to advise the masses.

It's actually the goverment's fault, supermarkets have been told to cut their plastic bag useage down by x% (can't remember what actual figure is) or get fined, and it's not pence they're gonna get fined!!

I got the lecture at Asda to! Forgot to get my bags out of the boot - crying baby and toddler kicking her shoes off distracted me. Did big food shop - we are a family of 6 and had bought pet food and a couple of bits of kids clothes. Got to checkout and asked if I had bags. Just realised I had left them in car, I said "no have left them in car". "Well never mind you can always load it into trolley and then pack it in car park". I got some free bags in the end but the cashier wasn't happy about it. She told me that I would need to start remembering them because they are stopping free bags in July!
I am another bag recycler to I use them as bin liners, for Oh lunchbox, (he never brings his plastic box home), for Dd2's wellies at school and also use them as bags to put Dd3's wet clothes in if she has an accident when we are out (the joys of potty training!)

i've received a lecture at asda aswell, i didn't have any carrier bags as i'd just finished work. a manager came over and told me i should have carrier bags to do my bit for the planet and that by wasting carrier bags, i'm causing massive untold damage. after telling her exactly what i thought her, i did indeed leave around £55 on the conveyor and walked out. i never ever bring old carrier bags with me, i always get new bags and try to double bag as often as possible.

i got a proper bollocking the next time i went in.

oh yea, it's the store i work in.

in all seriousness though, i never ever bring old carrier bags with me, i always get new bags and try to double bag as often as possible. i'm not being lectured to by supermarkets & the government pretending they're trying to save the planet by using less carrier bags, when asda's material bags (the ones that cost around £1 and have some utter rubbish about 'doing my bit for the environment) are made & flown in from china.

Interesting because i have just started using asda home delivery for food shopping. Now myself personally i have always put anything into a carrier bag, re usable or not, it just goes in any old way.

Yet the last 3 weeks i have had my shopping delivered its been divided up in carrier bags according to what it is, ie store cupboard, chilled foods etc.

Sometimes i get 1 item in 1 carrier bag, this week is was sandwich ham. So seems like they're okay to hassle instore customers about carrier bags but aren't bothered about the workers packing home delivery customers food.

I would not have been happy either about being lectured - esp in Asda

1, The amount of plastic at the fruit veg etc is a pain
2, meat is on plastic tray then double wrapped
3, last time I went to Asda the proceded to put my sour cream in a seperate bag !!!!!! its going in my fridge bag it doesnt need extra
4, ditto re my flowers
5, Asda bags are rubbish couple of weeks ago I done a £100 shop loads of bags and only 2/3 had not split - on one the handle ripped putting it from trolly to car

Most importantly if I dont reuse bags in store doesnt mean I dont recycle and I do not need some stupid store policy being thrown down my throat, these supermarkets have caused a lot of environmental problems, and how many of these people giving the lectures have kids using disposible nappies - which the UK sends 5 million a day to landfill - something needs to be done about that problem before bags which I use as bin bags etc.

We had a run in too this afternoon.
Got to the checkout and was asked if I had bags,and then when I said no she asked if I wanted to buy some.I said no thankyou,Id like the free ones.
Got the looks and the silent treatment.
The more they bully,the more bags I'll happily collect and use for my rubbish.
I'm not going to be dictated too,when they've got stroppy I just say would you rather I left all the shopping and went elsewhere.This has happened twice already.
It's becoming a bore and I'm now buying less and less at Asda.

you'll be thankful when something falls on the sour cream in the boot of your car and you end up with a [strike]beautiful[/strike] foul aroma wafting round your car
