Asda at Jewel, Edinburgh...as many free bags as you wanted. As it was, I already had my bags with me.

The Tesco Extra I was in the other day had completely run out of bags and it was utter chaos at the checkouts, people were going absolutely nuts, as they were only being told AT the checkout, when they'd already spent an hour wandering the aisles. I felt pretty smug as I had my big bag of Sainsbury's (:D) bags with me, but it was clear that there is a LONG way to go before the majority of people bring their bags back for reuse.

They had people running about handing out bin bags to people that were making enough of a fuss about it.

    LOL!

I did some shopping today in Sainsbury's with my own bags. Nevertheless there were free bags available if we wanted.

Update - Received an apology from Asda's customer services with the assurance that staff would be briefed regarding customers making 'impromptu visits' and not having bags with them. I am tempted to go back and check!!

I have been in several stores this week and the 'ladies/gentlemen' have said 'would you like a bag?' not one has said 'have you got your bags?'.

The same message but said in a kinder and gentler way.

on my last trip to my local asda i asked if they were getting rid of the bags and was told they were not. but they had to cut down on how many were used if not they would be getting fines and it would be coming out of the employees bonus

how true this is i dont know ????

Just bear in mind how grateful the cashier is for a smile and a hello and you might just get something back. Often I've been sitting on a till for 4 hours without a break, it's been non stop, my neck is killing me and I'm exhausted to the point of feeling sick. The last thing I want is someone being clever and deciding to leave £70s worth of shopping at my till. Have some manners! A friendly customer can make my day.
I've no idea where you are in the country but please be aware that somewhere a checkout person is being treated politely by me and/or my DH.

It has almost become a mission for us - we will never treat a check-out person with anything than respect - unless given reason to do otherwise.

The only reason to do otherwise is if the check-out person deliberately throws stuff down faster than we can pack.

Very true, if Asda gets fined it'll get split down with each store paying their share, which will cut into the profit that store makes which in turn will cut into the amount of bonus the colleague gets.
