Asda - carrier bags

Options
We are both in are sixties and had not planned on a shopping trip today, we decided on the 'hop' to call into Asda in Cwmbran, South Wales, so we didn't have any bags with us. We were treated like 'enemies of the planet' for asking for some bags to put our shopping in and given a lecture on how we should keep our re-usable bags in the car for these 'spur' of the moment' shopping trips.

We are both old enough to know how to recycle these bags and dispose of them without hanging them on trees in the countryside and certainly do not need 'checkout staff' telling us to organize ourselves.

If Asda are so concerned about 'saving the planet' then perhaps they should provide some strong paper bags for people like us who haven't actually planned a shopping trip.

I was all for leaving the shopping (over £70) on the conveyor belt and it was only the thought of leaving someone else having to put it all back that stopped me.

Goodbye Asda, I won't be shopping with you again.

Not being funny, but what has being in your 60's got to do with it?
And if you bought £70 of shopping i think you may have wanted the items, not been worried about somone else putting them back.
Really I don't think them wanting you to recycle is cause to stop shopping there!

Sainsburys and tesco give points for reusing carrier bags. asda give nothing! I ask for asda carrier bags and then reuse them at other supermarkets. if asda give points or something back then i will reuse in Asda.
    Just about to give up!

OMG Why do you need an incentive to recycle the carrier bags?
can't you just do it because it is a good thing to do?
  • Thank you for your reply sidefix, do you work for Asda customer service!! sounds just like their attitude.

No, i totally agree with sidefx. Thats such a selfish attitude to have, you don't do it just for the freebies you do it because its the right thing to do. I keep bags in my handbag now and made my OH keep some in the car, i don't shop at tesco's or sainsburys so i don't get points for re-using them, i re-use them because i want to.

And to the OP - i'm sure the checkout operator wasn't scolding you, just giving advice as most shops are now trying to do away with plastic bags alltogether. That is not the checkout operators fault, that is just something EVERYWHERE is doing. To use that as an escuse to never shop there again is just being petty.

Seriously, is everyone living under a rock? (in their own ideal world more like )

Asda is a bit annoying now for those spur of the moment shopping trips (especially when you have no car to put bags in). If I go in Asda on my way back from work I always limit what I buy now due to limited space in my bag (I carry 2 bags to work). It's not really doing anything to get people shopping there really. I prefer what Sainsburys and Tesco do, offering points encourages people to re-use. For the record I always try and reuse, but only when I'm purposely going out shopping.

I can well imagine that some uppity checkout staff would take advantage of an older person and take the opportunity to give them a good old lecture about recycling, thinking they know nothing about it. My Nan, at the grand older age of 84 doesn't recycle and finds it all a bit of a faff at her age. When visiting her I frequently take papers out of her food waste bags and put them in the proper box because I don't want her being fined.

I agree- it is quite rude to be lectured by someone else, especially someone in a 'service' position in a shop about being organised, that's not the place for it. OP- have you considered complaining in writing to the manager of the store about the attitude of their staff?

Asda did not offer any loyalty points/scheme as they said they would rather lower there prices, And seriously i believe there prices are lower in many items i use on a daily basis.

Like others have said, you do it as you are trying to help the planet a bit, Even in a small way.

Op, They are just trying to do there bit. I am sure the checkout people where lectured for ages before they started there shift about how they want them to lower there carrier bag usage by da da%.

I hate lectures! But once again, there could be a reason why (s)he had to say it.

And seriously, I would never stop shopping there even though i have even felt like killing the staff there.

And to say that all staff are rude is just well plain rude. I am sure there are people who wake up in the morning looking forward to helping someone etc, and there are bad staff and good.
