The day the supermarkets take seriously the issues of excess packaging of their goods is the day I will take seriously their policy of reusing their carrier bags.

I use new carrier bags most times I shop and reuse them at home as bin liners, which I never buy.

Do they similarly feel obliged to instruct their customers on the 'green ' credentials of the vehicles they will be carrying their shopping home in as they enter the supermarket car park. Since their massive edge of town supermarkets necesitate the use of the car for shopping trips for the majority of people.

Beyond the diversion of the carrier bags issue, the attempts by supermarkets to influence and control should be resisted as much as possible.
Wow, for a minute I thought I was reading my own post.I couldn't agree more.Must admit never had any trouble getting bags from either Asda or Tesco.

I was saying the generalisation from people on here about the staff. You have just did the same, generalised staff as being 'less brighter'
Because someone works in shop they are not bright? i'm sure there are plenty who arnt bright, but i'm sure there are plenty who are.

I doubt the staff are tarring everyone with the same brush (once again, i'm sure there are probably some who do) everybody is different, everyone has there own way of saying things, some people word things better than others, some people look at people certain ways and some people don't. everyone is individuale. If you want checkout operators to act like robots, then why don't you just buy online or use the self service tills?

Once again, there is no need to generalise a whole very large group of people.

I would generalise ANYONE who tried to lecture me about my shopping bags, and label them as "less bright" for doing so. There could be a thousand and one factors as to WHY I haven't got a reusable carrier bag at hand, being unvironmentally friendly not even taking the list,

Surely if I were to shop online (I never would, I dont trust the staff members to get the orders correctly enough), are you saying that somehow, the goods will arrive in a cardboard box? will the store for example ASK if I have any recyclable bags for them to use for my items and promptly pop around n collect them? Or are they not THAT efficiant at recycling?

Nobody is asking checkout to behave like robots, but please do show me where we do, however nobody is asking them to dictate how we take our shopping home either. All we ask is they price up the goods, and give us our change, is it really that difficult to do? Heck they dont even need to bag the items up for us, hense why we are shopping in a store, by a conveyor belt automatically placing our items on one after the other, rather than trusting some internet and Jo Bloggs to collect our shopping for us, bagging them up accordingly in their own branded carrier bags and delivering them in their own "branded" fuel polluting van.

It seems to me you are looking for someone who calls supermarket staff "less bright" JUST because they work on a till, Im afraid your on the wrong thread for a nitpick fight, the threads clue is in the title, there is no need to go around "generalising" what a large group of people have to say about a particular member of staff in a particular store on a particular topic. Nothing in this thread is "particular" and only those "less bright" individuals would wish to argue about that.

Do I use reusable bags? 90% of the time I am shopping I do, but not ALL the time. (sometimes I have used them up) I am not one to pay for carrier bags if I have a stash of them at home, (for many uses not just to go shopping with); who is anyone to tell me I am out of order in the 10% I don't have a bag?

  • I wanted to thank the people who responded to this post with understanding of why I felt upset and embarrassed by the situation I found myself in.

To some of the earlier responses from people who thought more criticism was in order I suppose your attitude in life is all about 'knocking' people when they are down.

One particular poster questioned my motive for not leaving my shopping, none of the items I purchased were Asda exclusives and could have been purchased just across the road in Sainsbury, at midday I had plenty of 'shopping time' to do it all again'. I had no reason to lie, it must to be hard going through life being so suspicious of people.

A special thank you poster for the 'seal joke', yes it did bring a smile to my face.

My opening post was not 'anti-recycling', it was about being made to feel like a naughty and irresponsible 'child' when my only crime was to make an unplanned shopping trip.

I do feel justified not to use Asda in future, this wasn't just a quiet friendly chat with a 'checkout girl', this lady made sure that everyone in our queue was aware of my 'sinful behaviour'. Yes, life is too short and even shorter when you are the wrong side of sixty, does that mean I should accept rude service and return to spend my money in a store where staff are not trained to deal with the unexpected. No - not when there are other stores available.

I have written a letter of complaint to the manager and hope it will help someone else who finds themselves in the same situation have a better shopping experience.

It might sound very strange to 'some' but the whole episode spoilt a nice day out for my husband and I.

What's wrong with writing a letter? It's the only way you will ever get them to listen to you. Usually quite effective. And I'm just pleased there are still people who remember how to...

I think this carrier bag fascism is hugely annoying. I don't think carrier bags are the leading environmental problem. I don't mind paying for carrier bags. But we all need bin bags, and preventing me from using a carrier as a bin bag just means I have to buy bin bags. So there's no reduction in the amount of plastic used. So what's the point? Anyway, since I walk home and don't damage the environment by using a car I have a perfectly clear conscience about using carriers. I have too rubbish a memory to bring the 'bag for life' with me most of the time - but that's no excuse for a lecture from some kid on a checkout!

If the supermarkets are so concerned with wasting plastic, then how come every time I buy fruit & veg loose, they scoop it all up and put it in another plastic bag? It's going in my carrier, I don't need another bag. I'm not convinced they know what they're doing.

Personally, I'm not keen on interacting with real people (much prefer forums!) so I like it when shop assistants just sell me my shopping without lecturing me or being patronising. But I also don't give a flying something about what strangers think of me, so if a checkout person lectures me, I'm quite happy to hold up the queue for 10 minutes telling them why they're wrong, and still leave my shopping at the end. Serves them right for interfering!:rotfl:

Good on you Sandie love, I went to a ASDA near me had well over £100 worth of shopping and the lady behind the till had a right face on and gave me 3 carrier bags to put my shopping in. I told her to behave herself or I'd leave it all there and never shop in ASDA again.

I think it's getting silly now the way they are acting so protective over a few stupid carrier bags. Lets all just face it that the planet is down the swanny anyway and there is nothing that we can really do and by the time it is all messed up we'll all be dead!

I am all for recyling but sometimes it goes a bit too extreme. Why should we be penalised for not bringing a few stupid carrier bags.

I think if a few more of us left our shopping on the belts that ASDA will have to think about how they are treating the customers.

I worked in a shop for a couple of years where they now charge people 1p a bag. I don't think people realise how rude, stressful and upsetting it is when they start having a go at you for saying they have to pay a penny.

    a. the charge has nothing to do with me - I work at the shop, I don't own it so don't throw your items at me when I say you need to pay a penny!
    b. it's a penny. it goes to charity. get over it.
    c. you will barely notice it in a big shop (if at all)
    d. if it comes out to £10.01 I'm sure you can cope
    e. if you don't have a 1p, the staff are normally fine and just hand it over
    f. you would not believe how many people have stopped and thought about whether they need it when asked to pay

Always think before you get angry with staff - they're people, too, and you'd hate to be shouted at when you're just trying to do your job

Btw, not trying to preach, lol. Just trying to give a workers view of it all:)

  • I took my mother in law shopping today to asda, decided while im here i will
get few things myself. When I got the till there was no bags out so I asked
for a couple, I was advised that they were no longer given bags out and
I would have to buy the 5p ones, fair enough I thought.
But when i walked down to the exit i noticed all the other tills had bags. I really
    hate been lied to.

The supermarkets are there to make a profit and that's it. If they charge you for carrier bags then leave and take your business elsewhere. I recycle carrier bags and mostly remember to take my bags for life with me but if I forget I refuse to be charged. If the supermarkets cared that much they would provide free bags for life. They don't so no lecture required!

I don't mind paying for carrier bags if I've forgotten to take my own - what I do object to is that the carrier bag advertises the store - why should I pay to advertise them?! Carrier bags should be plain if paid for.

Totally agree! I work at M&S and we charge 5p for bags. You wouldn't believe how often the customer will say that they need a bag and I say "they're 5p, is that ok?" and they say "Oh it's ok, I've got one in my handbag".
I've also heard the "I'm not paying 5p to advertise for you" one so many times. You could guarantee if we provided plain bags, they'd be the first to moan that we're cheap and our bags should have something on them.
The thing is, if I have a nice, decent customer who's happy to pay for one bag and then find out they actually need some more, I won't bother to charge them for the others.
On the other hand if I have a snotty customer who feels it's all MY fault for personally introducing a nationwide charge on M&S carrier bags, I'll charge them for every single one.

Just bear in mind how grateful the cashier is for a smile and a hello and you might just get something back. Often I've been sitting on a till for 4 hours without a break, it's been non stop, my neck is killing me and I'm exhausted to the point of feeling sick. The last thing I want is someone being clever and deciding to leave £70s worth of shopping at my till. Have some manners! A friendly customer can make my day.
