Asda - carrier bags

There needs to be a bit of balance here - retailers were warned in last years budget that if plastic carrier bag use didn't drop significantly then the government would introduce measures to force them down like a tax on them - so the question is, would you rather get a bit of a "lecture" but still have them available free when you need one on the spur of the moment, or would you rather they were just charged for on a blanket basis? The long term implications of continuing to hand them out freely, no questions asked are that they will stop being available freely. Other stores don't give them out free at all (M&S even try to charge for them on their self serve tills!).Adventure before Dementia!0

We were treated like 'enemies of the planet' for asking for some bags to put our shopping in and given a lecture on how we should keep our re-usable bags in the car for these 'spur' of the moment' shopping trips.
We are both old enough to know how to recycle these bags and dispose of them without hanging them on trees in the countryside and certainly do not need 'checkout staff' telling us to organize ourselves.
If Asda are so concerned about 'saving the planet' then perhaps they should provide some strong paper bags for people like us who haven't actually planned a shopping trip.
I was all for leaving the shopping (over £70) on the conveyor belt and it was only the thought of leaving someone else having to put it all back that stopped me.
Goodbye Asda, I won't be shopping with you again.
i too live in cwmbran and i brought some stuff from asda last week and asked for a carrier bag and was told in no uncertain terms that i would not be provided with a carrier bag and i did feel pretty embarrassed at ahving asked there are no signs up saying carrier bags arent avavilable and theres no need to be rude when asked for one althought i dont mind paying for the privledge it is a bit cheeky to demand itReplies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. If your reply cannot be nice, has an underlying issue, or you believe that you are God, please post in another forum. Thank you0 -
Its funny how Cwmbran seem to moan at us for asking for plastic bags ( which we also use for bins ) , yet on their home delivery service they are happy to give you 50 plastic bags with 2 - 3 items in each without moaning for a weekly shop.0

Your decision to re-use bags shouldn't be based on the fact well they don't do it so why should I, Asda might be irresponsible with packaging but that shouldn't have the effect of you being irresponsible. I do re-use bags but I also ask for them because like many others I use them as bin liners but I don't do it to spite the supermarket![FONT=georgia, bookman old style, palatino linotype, book antiqua, palatino, trebuchet ms, helvetica, garamond, sans-serif, arial, verdana, avante garde, century gothic, comic sans ms, times, times new roman, serif]A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don't need it

If the toothless spotty moldoon had said that to me, my response would be that you can get off your rrrrrrrrrr and put the job lot back on the shelf.
If these places were concerned about the carrier bag, why do they have them there for fruit and veg? GREENSH1T me thinks0 -
Also got refused bags in Asda.
So I put the items in the trolley instead and grabbed a handful of bags from the self service checkout on the way out - then bagged it all up in the car park0 -
What about all the extra petrol around the country for everyone driving around with the extra weight of some bags in their cars!! May not be much say 4 bags in your car, but if everyone did that!
I also recycle my bags by using then in waste bins around the house!0 -
It's not fair to refuse people bags but still offer them on the self serve. It should be all or nothing. Ridiculous.
If the shops stopped providing bags altogether and put visible signs up saying so, I doubt anyone would have a problem with that. It's the providing bags but being made to feel like a criminal for using them that I disagree with.0 -
£70 in Asda is about two and a half trolleys, to be fair you can't blame them for not wanting to give you that many bagsIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0
