I am so glad its Friday. A break from child number two (which means mine will be quieter). I’ve had a wonderful day today for eating...vitality breakfast, pasta salad for lunch and a slimfast shake snack. No sugar in tea and coffee and have had most of my water already. I didn’t get on the wii last night because once everyone had settled down I got on and coach said I’d already worked out for the day and he would be happier if I brushed my teeth and went to bed. When I checked my stamps-I realised that what I thought was an hour of exercise on Wednesday night was infact 2 to 3 am yesterday morning.I love the way that coach quipps at you...have you brushed your teeth? Do you know its very late? So I went to bed instead-in the lounge. Which was just as well because apparently DS was up all night. DF eventually got fed up at about 4am this morning and brought him in to me. We ended up watching brother bear-again. Then at playgroup, another little boy bit DS on his shoulder blade. It was so hard that he drew blood through his shirt. There were other mums around but not his. A few of them said he had been pushing their children around too. I yelled at him (mostly because I got a fright-he just wouldn’t let go) and I think it scared him so he went to find his mum. I went over and told her. She was very sorry and also shaken up-especially when she saw DS’s back. She was getting ready to leave and one of the keyworkers came over and said to me “have you calmed down now? Because you know it happens to all of us and if you make a fuss you just make it worse because you’ll embarrass the other mum” !!!
Raph you are going to hate me for this...But I’ll say it anyway. PLEASE do not order an M&S cake for your wedding! Not because I’m a deccie and biased-but because many hours are put into a cake like that by real tradespeople...but stores like M&S are killing the trade with factory stuff like this. It’s a fight we fight all the time, and I have heard of more than just a few deccies who have had to go on benefits because their livelihood has been taken from them-and that was before we were told we were in a recession. I will point you in the direction of the right tutorials to do it yourself if I have to (Ill find one of my peers in your area to do one for you-heck I’d come to you myself if I thought that would do it). But please don’t pay a big store like that. I’m the first to agree that there are deccies out there who do charge exorbitant prices-but most of us do it for the love of the craft and do charge very reasonable prices. Granted, I wouldn’t do a 3 tier for £40-but your guests would actually eat the cake I’d do for you-and enjoy it. It does take a few pennies to provide proper quality and although your cake might look good, thats not all that matters. (off my soapbox now then)
As for what I’m making...some polystyrene cakes. Designs for my website as its in need of some less “hobbyist” stuff. Also I’m really just using the opportunity to practice some new skills-so until this morning I wasn’t doing anything particular. But a lady at playgroup (who asked if I would do cupcakes for their school fair) has said that a lot of mums have been asking round school for birthday cakes. So I want to do a few more dummies (the polystyrene cakes) to photograph for a catalogue-and I may aswell take a few dummies with me to display on the day.
Victory see, it’s a sign. I love that- I wonder if I sent Argos an email saying I’d like to buy a wii when could they call me to offer it to me. Oh it does take all sorts, doesn’t it?
Sary It is lovely, isn’t it. I love the intricacy of the blossoms. I’m sure the butterflys are runouts and Im still petrified of that process so I probably wont be using them this time round. I do cakes for all my friends occasions. I do ask them to pay for ingredients sometimes-but my time and the delivery is always my gift. It’s a win win for everyone because I don’t have to wrack my brain for a gift that will likely never be used-and I get a picture for my portfolio as well as practice. The christening cake on my home page was one I did in January. It took me two weeks worth of about an hour a day to get the decorations done...and when it came to making it, I started at 4pm the afternoon before and worked through the night. I had just put the booties on top when DF woke up to take pictures. It cost about £60 in ingredients and she gave me £40 (Im very attached to the baby).
I'll be hanging around the rest of the day today-I have a guild meeting tomorrow so not sure when I'll be checking in then.0 -

Hi everyone...feel very pathetic right now and want to cry. I got "taken out" by two big retrievers today and as I fell they got tangled up in me and I twisted my ankle quite badly. I kept walking on it (realise I shouldnt of now) as it didnt feel too bad but it is absolutely killing me now, gah! Looked in the cupboard for painkillers and found plenty of morphene and tremadol...no ibuprofen though...how laughable. So will feel pathetic and hobble on lol. Strange how I can deal with and accept my normal pain which is a lot worse, but this has really thrown me.The cold doesnt help my general morale either I guess.
BB - how are you feeling now? A bit better I hope.
POLKADOT - I completely understand what you are saying about the cake but in some ways I think we have to buy what we can afford. For example my dad owns his own business that has been going for 30 years, but he cant even buy products at the prices that bigger companies can, and the consumer wants the cheapest product and the cheapest price, so lots just go to the massive companies (eg m&s etc). Its not fair on people like him and yourself trying to make a living, but unfortunately its every man for himself and its all well and good telling the consumer to support local independent businesses, but that costs more and with all these redundancies whos gonna support us while we support local businesses? I sound like I'm having a dig at you and I'm really really not, and your offers of help with instructions and tutorials etc for raph is amazing, so you should probably just ignore the grumpy woman with a snotty nose and a swollen ankle!!!0 -
damn, i missed the camel toe discussion! right up my alley and back again that is.
Today i got up earlier to go work at dover to welcome the itallians. I told probably 200 odd people to go and visit dover castle, then i was told it was shut. Woops! not my fault though, and i left before anyone returned!! result.
matt wants a 40-41 inch tv. 1080p, 2 scart sockets and a good make.

Wedding cakes, let me tell you a story about my mother and her gift to me was going to be the cake, she kept going on and on she had brought all the ingredients over from Spain, how much effort and time it was costing her, how she wanted this to be the best cake ever, on for months, she flew over, said that she had been charged extra at the airport for the luggage as it exceeded the allowance due to her carting so much cake ingredients over, wedding gets brought forward, I panic go to the local cake shop, apologize saying that I know it is short notice but could they do me a cake, she looks in her order book and asks me if I want to cancel the previous order, I have no order, never stepped foot in the shop, after a few mins it dawns on me, my mother had put in an order, was going to pass it off as hers and live off my undying gratitude and the family would think she was the Queen bee for going to so much trouble:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I cancelled her order and had a very quick heart shaped cake made up, as for the dress bought it in the sale for £250, put it in the free ads and sold itfor exactly the same price:D0 -
Goodness Victory that IS a story:rotfl:I did have to give a giggle as l;ots of our guild members in Spain and Greece ask us to send stuff to them:D
DMV I dont take offense at all. I understand the reality. But the fact is we are in a recession because of this very thing...each to his own does not work and hopefully the recession will help fix that in the long run. In the meantime, I am passionate about my craft and will do anything to help keep it alive. I would rather teach someone how to do it for themselves than have the big companies take the money for it. Their profit margins are so small on these items (if even existant)-they are just marketing ploys to get people into the stores for the real profit items.0 -
I think some hugs are required:
dmv - totally get how something relative less than normal suffering can bring on the weebles
victory - you are NOT a failure - the kids aren't bothered about it now but they had fun at xmas. A failure would be someone who persistantly refused to address a real financial crisis and keep spending regardless. It is not your fault you can't get a job either - my OH is on minimum wage and has nothing permanent: times are tough out there.
beanie - sorry things are tough; glad to hear your are 'ok'.
Thanks dmv -yes I am ok, particularly as I am at the start of 11 days leave:j. I'm hoping I will feel a lot better by the end of next week as I have slowly pick up from the migraines. A few nice things planned and lots of chilling out and hopefully decluttering (but don't hold your breathe...)I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -
i second the job thing from BB victory!!
Have a lovely weekend everyone, im working all of itboooo
