I have followed this recipe and I still think that water with a few tablespoons of vinegar tastes exactly the same iyswim. I will not be doing it again. I didn't make the sauce though.0

I made cola pork with Tesco's own brand coke (something like 40p for a litre bottle) and it was absolutely gorgeous. Made it again with Pepsi and couldn't really tell the difference, so I'd go for it
Like Jenster said though, don't use the diet version

I have just put the gammon joint in the slow cooker on low with some onion and coke ... I've put enough coke in to cover half of the gammon ... is this enough??
Cheers

If it were me, I'd leave out the coke, and use apple juiceHalf-covering the joint will be plenty. If you're determined to cook your gammon in phosphoric acid, colourings and flavourings
this thread might be useful for you.
I'll merge this thread to that one later.

I'm old fashioned and stick to water, bayleaf, onion, carrot and a few peppercorns. Each to his own.0

Thanks Penelope ... It's more for the novelty factor than anything! Gotta try everything at least once
... Will give fresh apple juice a go in a few weeks time

I'd like to try Nigella's 'Ham in Coca-Cola' recipe but apdapt it for use in my slow cooker. In her original recipe she uses an entire 2L bottle of Coke to completely cover the Gammon. Has anyone out there tried this recipe in a slow-cooker and how did it work out, how much Coke did you use and how long would you recommend cooking a 2KG gammon for???

Hi mnlad,
Welcome to MSE :hello:
There's an earlier thread about cooking gammon in coke with lots of advice on doing it in a slow cooker that should help:
Gammon & Coke
I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

I would like to try Nigellas recipe in my SC. I normally cook pulled pork which is lovely. One thing I dont understand with this gammon recipe is this, doesnt it fall apart like pork after it has been cooking all day. If so hpw can you glaze it in the oven.
Also I had gammon last night and it had a plastic skin/collar around the joint. Are you meant to leave this on in the oven? Packaging said remove packaging so I didnt leave it on.0 -
I cooked ham in cola for tea tonight to have with mashed potatoes and peas. Now I know my OH has a thing about raw (unbrowned) meat so i just bunged a couple of slices under the grill so i would look cooked (in his eyes). It been in the cooker for about 5 hours on high.
i then proceeded to make a gravy with all the lovely looking juices.
OH took one look and refused to eat it, I then realised that the gravy was horribly sweet (yes, that would be the cola!)
I had to carry on eating it just to make a point but feel really sick now!
What can I do with a load of very sweet gravy and some slices of ham?0
