Must admit I'm not doing the glaze but it does sound lovely.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

Have a slight problem, I wanted to try the gammon and coke recipe, but have managed to buy smoked gammon!
My question is would it be ok or should I take back to Mr M and get an unsmoked one?

I only discovered cooking ham/gammon in coke this Christmas (I used Nigella's recipe) and it was absolutely gorgeous! You have to use NON diet coke, (I just bought basics). I tried it cooked in the slow cooker but much prefered the normal hob method.
Hope that helps."It is always the best policy to speak the truth-unless, of course, you are an exceptionally good liar." - Jerome K Jerome0 -
i do the nigella version and sometimes use smoked gammon, just soak, and then do half the cooking in water with few veg so you dont wash all flavour away!! to take some of the strong smokiness out then proceed with the coke, the smoky flavour does go well with the sticky glaze at the end.£5000 debt cleared thanks to MSE advice :money:0

soaking helps as above but you could also try putting it in a pan of cold water and bringing it slowly to the boil till the froth rises then pour that away and rinse it and carry on with the recipe. I have never found smoked gammon too salty doing it this wayIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

This year at Christmas I took a smoked gammon, put it in water and brought it to the boil, drained the water off and then let it soak in fresh cold water overnight. I then drained it again and boiled it in ginger ale (a Nigella suggestion).
It was delicious! I've cooked gammon a lot of times, but this was the best.If we are supposed to be thin, why does chocolate exist?0 -
We never eat/ I never cook any sort of ham/bacon product that isnt smoked just because we prefer the flavour. I'm sure it doesn't matter, it just tastes that bit different, and all the advice above will sort it for you.0

I'm on my summer hols so i'm going to buy a small joint of gammon (only 2 of us!) and attempt to cook it in the slow cooker with coke ... but my question is ...
Does it have to be branded coke or can we use Tesco's own (not the value version mind you - unless someone recommends this!)
also ...
What do you guys throw in with yours? Don't fancy throwing in cloves as I don't want to buy a box just for this!
Cheers
