Gammon & Coke

I always cook gammon in cola,it's a recipe I saw nigella do. Never tried it with pork but sure it can work just as well. I would probably use shoulder of pork. Boil the pork in a large saucepan with 2 litres of full fat coke not diet!! I love gammon cooked this way:D0

I thought the recipe was for a gammon joint in cola.
I recommend an unsmoked gammon joint, as the smokiness tends to fight against the sweetness from the cola. I use a supermarket budget brand one. The slow and low cooking tenderises even one of these.
However, don't use diet cola (you need the sweetness of the sugar and don't need the chemicals from the artificial sweeteners) and the supermarket budget brand colas are diet ones. AFAIK, the cheapest supermarket own brand "regular" cola is Aldi's at 47p for 2 litres.
I introduced my rather fussy fiancee (well, she said yes to me!) to this, and there is no way I'm ever going to get away with doing it in just plain water ever again.
Having said that, I can't see why a pork joint (another vote for shoulder) shouldn't benefit from the cola treatment. I'd leave the strings on. It 'll probably fall apart when you remove them.If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?

I use a shoulder joint and take the string off. This is for pulled pork. I often use cider instead of coke and always include either apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar to balance out the sweetness. I also make a rub for the pork first but I guess you don't have to do that.0

Hi
I usually cook this on Xmas Eve, to have with bits on Xmas night, and buffet on Boxing day.
I haven't got much time to check out the cheapest place to buy, just wondered if anyone knew?
Looking for a piece of gammon-for about 12+ people or bit more, which I'll put in slow cooker.
The only shops I can get to are Morris*ons, Texco, Lid* and Asd*.
Saw a smoked one in Asd* tonight for £10, anywhere cheaper?
I am going to have a look in local butcher tomorrow too.
Thank you:beer::j0 -
I use the ASDA SmartPrice unsmoked (I've found that the smoky taste fights against the sweetness from the sugar in the cola) ones, at just £3.78 per kilo. As the long, slow cooking tenderises even these (to the point where you can "carve" them with a fork), I can't see much point spending more.If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?

Do you think I would be able to get a big enough piece though?
Usually I see Smart Price gammon & they are quite small.
Although there may be bigger pieces around now.
Also my local Asda is small- used to be a Netto.
Will have a look on Monday when I'm at work and near the Asdaa -thank you.

I made this today and as nice as it was, I didn't think it was all that people rave about (but then I'm Irish and my mum makes a wicked bacon and cabbage).
But now I have all this liquid in my slow cooker (it didn't liquidise into a bbq sauce like I was expecting). Is there anything I can do with it besides chucking it?Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010
