  • Haven't tried it in the slow cooker, mainly because the gammon's usually too big, there wouldn't be room for much cola! I cook mine on Christmas Eve in a big pan on the stove, once it's simmering you don't have to do anything with it for a couple of hours, so it's no extra bother really.

  • Yes, I have mine in cherry coke right now. Strange thing is, the colour has gone from the coke. It's just clear liquid......
  • I do mine like that, but I was told always use full Coke never diet, don't know why, but it always tastes delishhhhhh, so I'll hang with it.

I do mine in slow cooker. It does fall apart but it's very nice. I've just got my gammon out to defrost (our butcher never has any left by Xmas eve!) and it will be going in tomorrow night, in coke and peppercorns.

  • My son-in-law has cooked the Christmas Gammon in cider and studded it with cloves,DD says its beautiful I shall have a wee taste later on today when I go round there
  • I'm trying this out for the first time for Christmas dinner tomorrow (like a risk, me).

I didn't realise you should glaze it afterwards though, I can see why that would make it nicer. What can I use for a glaze as I'm not going shopping again! I've got chestnut honey (incredibly strong flavour, I'm not that keen but maybe would make good glaze?), marmalade, little bit of sugar, but that's it as far as sweet stuff goes. No mustard, cloves etc. Lots of herbs but not really any spices.
Do you just brush the glaze stuff on or do you melt it first/thin with water?

  • Hi. Shame you haven't got any mustard. I did a glaze with honey and dijon mustard this year but I'd baked the gammon (not cooked in coke). You could try marmalade and I'd be inclined to melt it a bit in a saucepan before brushing over and even though you haven't got cloves, I'd still criss cross it with a sharp knife into a diamond pattern. HTH.
