Hi,
Thanks to this site I have today received full recovery of my bank charges plus interest over the last 6 years from Barclays Bank.
My claim was for approx £1000.00,I followed the step by step guide here but when the OFT waiver by the courts was extended to July this year I followed the advice here and went down the financial difficulties route with my bank.
I have to say Barclays were very helpful (not my local branch) and provided me with a budget planner which I completed and my claim was paid in full plus £60 interest/goodwill.This all took just one month.many thanks Barclays and many many thanks Martin.
Don t delay go for it.

Bank: Barclays
Amount Claimed: £1250
Amount Recieved: £952.50
Story: Well this is my SO's claim, I thought I'd write about it here. We started the procedure ages ago but only found out recently about the financial difficulty clause so Dec. 2008 He sent off a letter asking for his claim to be reviewed, they asked us for a SoA which we promptly sent back and 2 weeks ago we got a "gesture of goodwill" cheque of £950.50 with a cover letter to explain that the excess will be paid back also if this case rules in the customer's favour.
We are going to go through our HSBC statements and go the same route. It will sure get us out of a pickle!
Thanks to Martin for all the articles and advice!:j

I wrote to my main account providers asking for a refund of my bank charges (around £185.00) on the basis of being a 'hardship' case (over £600 a month more going out than I have coming in and having to withdraw on credit cards to make ends meet). They took a while to acknowledge my letter but sent out a form for me to complete detailing my income and expenditure. I got a letter from them yesterday advising that whilst the charges were valid, they were going to refund me £345 on the basis of my circumstances! Must have been my further bank charges since writing the letter plus interest?
Who: Alliance & Leicester
Asked for: £185.00
Awarded: £345.00!
Now just waiting for my response from Natwest.
Thank you Martin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :T

I lodged two letters asking for refund of bank charges with both Abbey and Natwest last year. I then wrote to them both in January claiming under the financial hardship waiver.
Provider: Abbey
Amount claimed £3600
Amount paid: £4029.
I didnt ask for interest in my template letters so they have obviously done this themselves.
Provider: NatWest
Amount claimed: £1400
Still waiting for Natwest to even decide whether Im actually in financial hardship. Letter was registered as received on 12th February, they finally faxed it to their collections department last Saturday (7th March) but couldn't explain where it had been for the last month.
Will continue to chase but well pleased with Abbey's payout.0 -
Bank: Ulster Bank
Amount Reclaimed: £1083
Amount they paid: £903
The story:
Have had this ongoing since Jan 08. Court proceedings were issued and put on hold. Hav accepted the amount and asked them to clear the default information logged against me. Nice to deal with. I was successful in the claim as i am in financial hardship.0 -
Bank: Abbey
Amount claimed: £270
Amount paid: £270
To my great surprise I was made redundant in early December last year. Consequently I got my finances in a bit of a tangle over Christmas and racked up quite a bit in bank charges.
I explained my situation to Abbey, they were extremely sympathetic and sent me a form to fill in. Within a few weeks I had obtained a full refund.
During the whole of this process I found them to be most pleasant to deal with, which is gratifying, especially when I hear some of the horror stories from other bankers.0 -
Great to hear the success stories on this subject, just wish they would sort me out. It seems that persistence may be the way forward.0

Hi Guys and Gals
I have just had a letter from Barclays with a cheque attached. However, the amount is £250 less than what i claimed for. The letter states that due to my financial difficulty (the reason why i claimed), they have made a goodwill gesture, which is nice of them! They have also now closed my claim. So, my predicament is, do i go for the extra money that they rightly owe me? Also, I am on a DMP, which Barlcays has noted in the letter, and they ask that i apply the cheque to reduce my balance accordingly. Thing is, I am due to move out of where i am living in 5 weeks, and this money will come in very handy for that. Plus I am in the process of increasing my monthly payements to my creditors by quite a substantial amount. I know that i cannot just give Barclays the money back as the other creditors will kick off over unfair treatment.
Should i go for the £250 difference in charges?
Will Barclays be on my case in a few weeks if i dont give them the money back?
Many thanks for any help.0
