    Amount claimed £3200
    Amount awarded £3700

I requested statements for previous 6 years and totalled the charges and went down to my local branch.I spoke to staff in the bank and they said it was bank charges that everyone pays even they pay them and they wouldn't refund them. They were actually quite snotty with me so I wrote to the bank asking for charges to be refunded and when I got my letter saying no way and it was a full and final response,I waited 8 weeks and contacted Banking Ombudsman and complained. The Ombudsman contacted the bank who offered me more than I had claimed (they totalled in interest which I hadn't bothered with).Needless to say I accepted. I then went to the local branch with my letter of award and showed it to the snotty cow who said no to a refund the first time lol.
  • Bank: NatWest
    Amount Claimed: £5500
    Amount Paid Out: £5043

My husband had an serious accident about 5 years ago and was off work for approx 1 year. We claimed off the NatWest mortgage protection, they paid it into our bank on 20th of each month but NatWest tried to take it out on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th etc, each time charging us £35 as the money wasn't there and £28.00 for each letter. We did ring them to explain but they kept doing it.

I applied to reclaim the charges in April 2007 I added interest and an amount for stress. I rang them every week, and sent a letter every week (just had one saved on my PC and changed the date).

I received a letter last week offering me £5043, which I was really only expecting £3000 so good result all round. Just waiting for it to arrive into my account.

My advise is to keep sending letters after all they have to acknowledge each letter you send and you don't have to pay £28.00 each time they send you one!!!!
Claims to come in (hopefully);) : £550 Bank, £2500 PPI
    Claims received:T : £1881.00 Standard Life, Bank Charges - £5043.00:T

  • Im probably in the wrong place but want to report my recent success with Barclays bank. Claim started July 2007 and put straight on hold. I was fed up with it all and still getting the new reserve fee! 22 pounds for every 5 days that you are over your overdraft. So 30th Jan 09 I sent hardship claim, 2 weeks later I had a letter advising me gesture of goodwill they have paid the money back into my account that day!! not full ammount but nearly 2K so very happy bunny now. Will get the rest once the test case is over. Keep at it everyone I have waited nearly 18 months for this!
  • Ps thanks martin you are a hero in our house. xxxxxxxx
  • barclays had just paid me £1500 under half what it is still owing myself. It said a goodwill payment after i sent back hardship case letter. I am still now asking them for the rest, also the FOS are dealing with this so fingers crossed and with the good news on high court case mabe will soon receive the rest/
  • I recieved a call today from bos/halifax to say that my claim for refunded bank charges under financial hardship has been awarded and i will be getting all charges on all three accounts refunded...just over £1000!It took three letters and numerous phonecalls but it was all worth it in the end, don`t give up!i started the process at the start of january so just over 8 weeks all in.thanks to the site for helping me stand up for my consumer rights!:T :j

I wrote to Barclays claiming over £5k of bank charges under the hardship guidelines. They sent me a response saying that they were not liable to refund the charges and asked me to send in an income/expenditure form (January 09). I completed it and sent it back and they have refunded £3.7k of charges as 'goodwill' and promise to pay the difference if the court case decrees that the charges are unfair. A fantastic result for a few pounds to get the statements and a few hours to go through them all, log the transactions and write 2 letters.

One might think that they are making a lot of payments now in advance of the legal decision to ensure they can write off a lot of the losses in the current financial year (are they receiving support from the Gov't?) leaving them less open to losses when the upturn comes.
