Having signed up with 1-tel I get FREE directory enquiries on 118111. Also the BT basic tariff that I still have to pay gives £2 per month call allowance, I can't use this on local & national as they are free with 1-tel but by prefixing 1280 I can use this on 0845 & 0870 numbers as they are no more expensive with BT. So I get up to £2 of free 0870 & 0845 Nos. per month.
Tony,
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the £2.15/month call allowance was scrapped on the 1st July 2004 for "BT Standard" customers (what you are calling BT Basic)
Also, the call allowance never applied to 0870 numbers anyway (0845 numbers were allowed though)
I think you will find BT have now moved you to their BT Together Option 1 tariff.
They have some information/an FAQ on the changes at http://www.bt.com/onlineoptions/
Regards

After reading Martin's great article about saving money on phone calls I came to this discussion area and find it very interesting.
I've been thinking about signing up with call18866.co.uk and just had a look at their website to find out more.
And there is one thing I don't like - bill payment has to be set up on your credit or debit card i.e. a continuous payment authority.
Martin wrote about this in April; the link to this discussion forum is http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Questions;action=display;num=1082515286
Has anybody had experience with call18866 - can they be trusted?
Thanks for your help.

I have a reference file which tells people which service provider to use for different types/lengths of calls. How do I upload it?0

Yes they can be trusted. I've used them for 4 months no problems. After reading Martin's great article about saving money on phone calls I came to this discussion area and find it very interesting.

:-/one for the maths experts. I have 2 lines in house,
line;
1; only used evenings and weekends;calls lots of mobiles in evenings?
line
2. used for internet broadband occ other calls.
Any ideas what is best package ?
on option 3 but really not using it to its best.
The advice from Anon (guest) was not necessarily correct. I too have 2 lines, because the cheapest package for Broadband is £17.99 per month, plus cost of modem, connection fee, etc. You are forced to have your line rental from BT (or ITplc if you are prepared to use them for all your calls). I use a dial-up unmetered service from Fast 4, which is currently £6.99 per month including cost of calls, so at present it is not worth changing to BB. (others available such as V21 )Then you use one of the cheaper companies like 18866, One Tel etc. for your telephone calls. It is still a rip-off by BT and they give no reduction for 2 lines to same address. If any one has a better idea, please tell us !!!"0844 COSTS YOU MORE"0 -
If you use talktalk and 18866, the cheapest for 0845 is always 18866 - 3p per minute +1p connection. 0870 is cheaper with 18866 Mon-Fri at 7p per min +1p connection, but cheaper with talktalk on weekends at 2p per min +5p connnection.0

telediscount is excellent - my own provider Telewest charge me 25p per min for calls to Germany, telediscount 2p per minute. My wife regularly calls her freind for an hour at a time, now I'm not standing over her with a watch!
https://www.call18866.com charges just 1p per min to Germany +1p connection0
