I found out something new last week.
If your BT phoneline develops a problem and your calls are diverted until an engineer is available, you are entitled to compensation. (£1 per day plus some other bits!)
I recieved £24 for 3 weeks diverted calls.
I never new about this. I wonder if everyone else does?0 -
Someone please help a confused old lady. When I make a call on BT line my telephone number is not left. In other words I am anonymous if 'phone not answered. Does this change if I sign up to 1899. Also do I have to alter the telephone no setting for my broadband connection and will the Orchid make any difference to this?0

your number like mine is witheld by BT .Your number will still be witheld if you use 1899,18866, 18185 onetel ,Talk Talk or whoever .If you want your number to show up dial 1407 then the phone number you want .you can use orchid and still have your number witheld , or there is an option to show number either way orchid will still work .Sorry I dont no about broadband but on my dial up connection I had to insert 1470 in front of the dial up number .0 -
If you are on broadband you don't have a dial up number to change

I hope I am lodging my queries in the right place. Having just discovered Money Saving Expert I am keen to make some money saving changes and have chosen to tackle the telephone first. I have been roving around various sites, including this forum for a number of days and have lots of information which I can’t seem to un-muddle and make work clearly for me.
Current Status
BT - line provider - DD £10.50
Tele2 - CPS - DD £7.49 all inclusive + competitive international rates???(until I discovered this site)
Onetel - dialup 0808xxxx £6.99 daylight savings package (between 6am & 6pm) 1p/m thereafter
The phone bill averages around 75 local and national calls per month and at £7.49 for Tele2s all inclusive package I was paying around £5 too much (compared to call1899). I will reduce this to the Tele2 basic free plan for weekends only (my evening calls are practically zero) and have as yet to sign up with 1899 or 18866. So thanks to Martin’s information I will be saving almost £50 a year. For peak-time domestic calls I am unable to differentiate between 1899 and 18866 -- both charge 3p connection and 0p/m for local calls and 1899 seems to be slightly more competitive with other types of UK calls.
This deals with the domestic calls but given all the options available for the INTERNATIONAL destinations that I call I find myself needing advice.
The best option, at present, seems to be TopUpNow which I accessed via Telestunt (are they sister companies?) TUN has 0p/m to Australia, Canada & France (all frequent destinations for me) plus a connection fee of 5p. The catch, if it can be described as a catch, seems to be buying credit for your phone via a 09number. If anybody has used this facility would they please tell me how much it usually costs to purchase credit -- the sites says £1.50 per call. Is this right?
Otherwise DialAround seems to be the best option for me out of the 0844/0871 companies. Information from Tele2 revealed that a Telestunt 0844 number to Australia will be charged at 3p/m which is more than the 1p/m that Telestunt advertises. From this can I understand that it is only by using BT as a line provider that I will then be charged the advertised 1p/m ? I also confirmed with Tele2 that by dialling 1280 as a prefix will revert me to BT. From this I understand that by using 1280 that Tele2 will not charge me for any calls that get routed through BT and I will thus get calls at companies‘ advertised rates (connection fee aside) I want this to apply to non-geographical numbers as well (aside from using saynoto0870). I think I read on THIS site of someone using 1280 to bypass their provider’s higher 0870 rates to access BT’s lower ones
If I switch to Just Dial can I still bypass them to access BT1280, call1899, call 18866 without contravening their T&Cs. A perusal of their site revealed nothing about this and they seem to have 3 sets of T&Cs for different purposes. This topic was easy to find on Tele2 and confirms what I obtained verbally from them re BT and which I suppose applies with call1899 and call18866.
As can be seen I have lots of info --probably too much actually. any help in assisting me to clarify and organise this would be very much appreciated. a big thanks in advance0
