I was just searching for better deals as I'm phoning Austria on a regular basis. 18866 is charging 2 p per min, but according to Martin there is the lo-call option. Does that mean I am only charged for a lo-call until I am connected to the Austrian number or for the duaration of the call? Will I be able to use my BT allowance for that?
    BT allowance? What's that?

The cheapest way to call Austria at the moment appears to be via one of the dial-through 0844 numbers (1p/minute at all times):

    Ratebuster 08447 20 20 20
    CheapestCalls 0844 861 1313
    DialAround 0844 861 53 53
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

With BT allowance I meant the free minutes that are included in the basic package.

    Thanks for your help.

But 18866 charges 2p connection and then 2p per minute to Austria and, subject to their 5p minimum call carge, you'd only be charged 1p per minute by BT to call Austria using any of the 0844 dial-through firms:

    Ratebuster 08447 20 20 20
    CheapestCalls 0844 861 1313
    DialAround 0844 861 53 53

  • I have Ntl cable, I have recently signed up to OneTel for the free weekend and evening calls (free for one year offer) and 18866 for any daytime calls I might need to make. Can I cancel my Ntl cable line I have for the phone (I don't use Ntl cable for anything else) or do I still need it to make outgoing calls and of course to receive incoming calls, because I will save at least £11.00 if thats the case. Also I have caller display will I lose this if I disconnect from Ntl? Just remembered my dial-up internet is on Ntl, what do I do about that? Please help confused.
Can somebody give me an answer.

If you cancel your NTL line you would need to then go back to BT for your line rental at £10.50 per month if paid by DD plus a small monthly charge for caller display.

Should you change to BT you will have a greater choice of ISP for your internet access and slightly cheaper calls through 18866. You will still be able to route your calls through Onetel but by the time you add on the caller display charge to BT rental I don't think you will make any savings.

I used to be with Onetel and just today received a flyer saying they are to be doing a line rental at £9.99 per month so you might want to call Onetel to check this out.

Hello, first time I've really read this thread, and now I think i may have made a
    up of changing provider!!!!

We have been with TalkTalk3 (£11.05 per month-free calls anytime, and reduced rate to mobiles) for quite a while and had negatiated a £5.00 loyalty bonus discount. Our bills are about £13.00 per month, we have to call mobiles a lot.

The line retal is with BT, standard rate-can't remember now...is it about £29.00 a quarter??

Broadband has just come to the area, and hubby has been eager to sign up for years!! He searched for his ideal package (all I do is go on here, and have friends e-mail me!!!!), he decided on Tscali £17.99 per month, but if you go with them as phone provider it brings this down to £14.99. Then you pay an extra £9.99 to Tiscali Smart Talk. This gives you free any time calls, and it seems the same rate to call mobiles as TalkTalk. There is also an opton to pay £1.00 more and have 25% off the cost of calling mobiles. But I think that comes when the documentation package arrives, we haven't had this yet.

So I will be paying in the region of £30 to £35.00 for broadband and calls per month. Please bear in mind there are two teenage girls in the house, using the phone a lot, I limit calls to mobiles to almost nil. But hubby works long, strange hours, and can be called out anytime of night, so I do have to ring his mobile quite often....to say his tea's in the micro.....or in the cat!!!!

Have I done the right thing? I don't think hubby can be swayed from Tiscali Broadband tho????

    Thanx
    :j

I take it you have signed up for this that you are waiting on documentation?

If you have and you can't get out of it now there is no point in beating yourself up about it and reading about what could be a cheaper and perhaps better way!

If you can get out of it, come back and I am sure everyone here can take apart your package and put together another one (I am avoiding putting better here ;)) if you can't get out of it avoid reading here until your year is nearly up :D

I just bought a laptop, good deal, I was pleased. Then this week PCW have a great bargain so I ignored the thread :)

BUT if the transfer hasn't gone through yet come back quick and let us know!!

    AVOID TISCALI LIKE THE PLAGUE!!

They are probably the worst broadband ISP in the UK.

See here and here and here
