I have just received my invoive for 1 month from 18866 it is £7.40 in total ( for about 50 calls). they have charged me a 1p connection fee plus 1p per minute for each call. I thought the calls were free. has anyone else had this problem?
If your calls were to UK 01 or 02 numbers from a BT landline using the 18866 prefix, they should, indeed, have been 1p connection and 0p per minute.

If your calls were to UK 01 or 02 numbers from a cable landline using the 0808 freephone number, they should have been 1p connection and ½
p per minute.

The Utility Warehouse.

Just to let people know, the company now supplies line rental ( for BT customers only ) as well as cheap call rates, with the benefit that all their customers can call each other for free.

No box needed, CPS only. Box still needed for cable customers.

The article this relates to is here however do note this article has been updated since the discussion was started.

This is my first time at anything like this, so I hope I'm doing it right!
With the cheaper phone options you have suggested, can you prefix your internet connection with say, 18866?

Dave, to use 18866 as a prefix to an ISP number you need to find a geographical number to use, there is a thread discussing this here.

I believe it can be done but is not very reliable as the number can end up being blocked or require a lot of dialing attempts before you get through.

Hi, in case anyone is interested, we have just had our first e mail from 18866 advising very clearly our account including the vat, this was for £3.15p!! Magnificent, a tremendous saving, we have kept strictly to national and local numbers, but used BT for the 0845, 0870 etc, calls as they are slightly cheaper than 18866 who very kindly tell you what it is going to cost you, to try and get it out of BT is nearly impossible. Anyway, we had opted for credit card payment, so rang credit card company with baited breath, and yes, the correct amount was taken, so if anyone is concerned about it, they have done a good job for us.
For anyone else on 18866 reading this,do you ever get an echo of your voice in the background of what you are saying? This happens quite often.
Also, in case anyone has not read the post, I cannot remember where it was, you put http and and s added on when looking at your invoice, this way you get the padlock,
Cheerio for now, oap
• We have the Talk Talk package which also gives us free weekend and evening calls for a year, so don't want to leave until the end of that period. Can we register for 18866 at the same time as using Talk Talk in order to benefit from the 1p daytime calls to UK landlines? New to all this. Sorry if this has already been covered.

Not a problem to use 18866 with TalkTalk, I am with TalkTalk and use 18866 for all my daytime and international calls. Although if you are going to call abroad, do check out the Call Checker for the cheapest rate here.

There are catches, which Axeman didn't mention. (T.U.W. is another name for Telecom+.)

Their line rental is slightly cheaper (£10 per month v £10.50 with BT), but you have to pay their "club" membership fee as well (£1.76/month), making the total more expensive at £11.76/month.

You could make 126 calls using 18866 via BT for a total of £11.76 - doing that via T.U.W. would cost a total of £13.02!

The Utility Warehouse.

Most members of this club have more than one service and therefore receive cashback each year.

In my case I received £40 last year, which I will allocate towards my phone bill.

So that knocks BT line rental ( with membership ) down to £8.43 per month.

And the rest of my cheap services mobiles, energy, internet are now a bonus and free of membership costs.

For those people who choose NOT to use 18866 it is a much cheaper option than BT.

But Smartass IS right, If you take phone ONLY, you would have to consider the membership as well.

Axeman, this board and thread is about Home Telephone and not about adding in other utilities to receive some cash back that may or may not be put against the phone side of your annual bill.

It would be helpful to MSE users if you put the actual cost of line rental per month with no other utilities for them to make up their minds if this is a cost effective line rental for their use.
