Which product are you on and how are you paying.

Basic BT line rental in £9.50 if you are on basic line rental only (not Together package) and you pay by monthly or quarterly direct debit.

If you are on a different package or don't pay by those methods then you will be paying more.

£11.50 is the current price for BT Together Option 1

It is being reduced to £10.50 from the 1st July.

The current BT Standard Tariff is £9.50

It is being abolished from the 1st July and all "Standard" customers are being moved to the BT Together Option 1 tarriff

(All prices assuming you pay by direct debit or monthly payment plan - otherwise add £1/month)

BT have some information on this change at http://www.bt.com/onlineoptions/

    Hi Martin Lewis,

Great site, which I heard about on the Jeremy Vine show!

I couldn't find the answer to my question, so decided to post it here.  I was forced to get a BT line installed (which cost me a fortune) to use the internet.  I seldom use my phone itself, but need the line for the web.

So my quarterly bill comes out at around 25p call, and £28 line charge!  I am getting fed up with this, and was wondering if there is something I can do.  People moan about the Television licence, but at least you are getting something for your money there!

I expect I will hit all sorts of other problems like internet providers only being compatibel with BT or something.  I have just got my first mortgage though, so I could do without throwing money away like this.

    Thanks
    Dez

Have a look at https://www.itplc.com, it offers a cheaper line rental than BT. You will need to check if it will work with your internet provider.

I have a BT line, but am billed by London Energy.
Can i join and use 18866, or do I have to ditch London Energy first, return fully to Bt, and then register.
    Confused!

    Cheers
    Dan

After reading the "unbeatable" recommendation in Martin's Money Tips on 10th June I switched to using 18866 at 0.5p per minute + 1p connection to UK landlines .. great, with per second billing and online itemised statement. We hear that "If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is". After one week I see the https://www.call18866.co.uk website shows the charge rate has now DOUBLED to 1p per minute, but I just made a call which stated a charge of 0.5p per minute. The website was unavailable yesterday and it is now named "version 2" .. what do you think???

You should be able to use 18866 without "leaving" London Energy

Just one thing though - looking at http://www.london-energy.com/showPage.do?name=homephone.prices.til

London Energy may not be cheaper than BT from the 1st July unless they lower their prices

Call 18866 used to charge 1p/min until recently

They then changed to 0.5p/min for UK calls

The "splash" screen still says 0.5p and calls are still charged at that rate.

However, the "Quick Rate Check" has changed back to 1p/min

18866 had changed it to 0.5p but seem to have changed it back - lets hope its a mistake and not an indication of their future plans

Where does it say its "version 2" of the site?

    18866's sister company - 1899.com also charges .5p but has a 3p connection charge not 1p like 18866

    Hi Sunil

Website http://www.call18866.co.uk/rates.php# brings up the home page. The description of this browser in the Taskbar says "Welcome to call18866.co.uk version 2". The charge rate to UK fixed lines shows as 1p per minute + 1p connection charge. However, I just tried another call .. it still quotes "half a penny per minute" after dialling. Uncertainty and inconsistency therefore persist.

Thanks - the version 2 wasn't there when I was looking earlier.

As for what they charge - always go by te telephone message and not the web site.. though I hope it remains at 0.5p!
