I've printed off all my statements for the past 6 years and it totals just a touch short of £400. Not a massive amount, but am determined now to get it back off HSBC! I've tried my best to view the letter that Martin recommends to send to the bank, but am having great difficulty doing so. Does anyone have an easier link to the letter itself?:money:
If you keep clicking on the letter in Martin's article it should enlarge, alternatively sign up to the CAG forums here or via the link in Martin's article and that will give you information on letters and experiences for all the major banks :)

recieved 1st letter from natwest this morn
    as follows:
Thanks you for your letter dates 26th Sept (this was 2nd letter I had sent)I apololgise for any dissatisfaction caused by the application of charge to your account.
We believe that our charges are fair, reasonable and transparent. We consider that the amounts debited to your account have been applied strictly in accordance with your agreement with us and our published tariff, which we are satisfied, complies with all applicable laws and regulations. We are also commited to ensuring the transparency of the information that we give to ur customers about the operation of our products.
We have considered and responded to the office of fair tradings statement of 5 April 2006. We do not accept the office of fair tradings findings in relation to credit card fees. We are concerned that the office of fair trading has publicly called into question the setting of charges applied to other products, including current accounts. The office of fair trading has restricted its investigation to credit cards and made no attempt to consult with RBS/NATWSET or the industry in relation to other, entirley different products.
Consequently against that background, we must differ with the views expressed in your letter and will not be refunding any of the charges applied to your bank account.
Again thank you for taking the time and trouble to write.
    yours sincerly

Well i posted my 2nd letter 2 weeks ago today so whats the next step and where do i get letter from to send next?
  • I have a 0% Skycard with a credit limit of £4400. Last month i went over the limit unknowingly by a couple of hundred (the let me??).
This coincided with my laptop breaking so i was unable to do online banking etc but knew (thought) i would be safe as i have a direct debit setup for monthly payments.
When I looked at my account yesterday i saw there was a £65 MERCHANDISE INTEREST FEE and 2 lots of £12 for OVERLIMIT FEE.
I called them and they say because i broke the credit limit they applied full interest to the full amount!
I have now dropped the amount below the limit but this does not guarantee the rate will go back to 0%.
Who thinks I stand a chance of claiming this back as it seems mightily unfair esp as i've never missed a payment??

  • This year, for a range of reasons, I have accumulated £210 of charges from Nationwide. Its mainly because its an account used purely for bills and I have money coming in and out all over the place. I have to accept some responsibility as it is due to the money coming in after the other money has gone out that some of my direct debits have been returned.

I was prepared to handle it but yesterday they charged me £90 after 3 missed payments last month. If you look at the account you can see clearly that its a mismatch of dates/payments etc. Its not like the account is permanently empty (not that any of that is relevant I'm sure).

Anyway, I have been to the branch today and they said they do not deal with it at branch level but I should write to their head office in Swindon. I should write in my 'own words' as they look for 'key words' in the letter to decide whether to refund or not.

I was planning to just follow the steps indicated on Martins article and other related websites but I have to say I thought what the branch said was a bit cryptic?!!!
