JayB wrote:Hi all,
I recently went travelling for 6 months to Thailand & Oz. Whilst over there I used mt Barclays current account debit card to withdraw cash from machines. It wasnt until I got home that I noticed massive amounts of interest / charges for the pleasure of withdrawing my cash abroad.
Can I reclaim any of these charges? & if so how do I go about it?
Thanks
No as this charge is for providing a service.0 -
hello,
Ihave approached my building society about my charges i have had over £3000.00 in charges in the last six years .I have sent them a letter to ask for them back and just got a very rood letter saying it is my own fault i could of moved to a different bank. I have informed them that i will take it to the small claims court, but still they are adamant that they are not going to settle with me. I have recieved my court forms to fill in but just wondered before i go any further are charges from building societies illegal aswell. Hope you can hep with this question.0 -

Well done to Dave Smith and the Consumer Action Group
I sent the standard letter to First Direct with a spreadsheet showing all the charges over the last six years (I had kept all the statements). Within seven days they replied saying the didn't accept any fault on their part but that they would pay in full to avoid legal costs. I had to sign and return an acceptance slip and within 5 days £1044 was credited to the account.
Brilliant! I never thought it would be so easy.
I will keep the account for now but if they don't change their policy on penalties I will probably switch.0 -
Ive just received my monthly bank statement-I've not always been very careful and we've been in varying amounts of debt over the years-but recently I've been checking the bank accounts online and really keeping on top of them-which means keeping them within the agreed OD limits, anyway, bank statement has come, we have an agreed OD of £1000, for most of the month we were £5-600 OD, but then on 1st of June 3 payments went out, and we went £74 over and have been charged £25. I appreciate that this isnt a huge amount, but with interest its £33 and we were back down to £899 OD the next day-with a weekly standing order from an account at the same bank..
any thoughts?Budget for Jan/Feb £240 per 4 weeks
Week 1-£52  Week 2-£75
Week 3-£60.66Week 4-£29.98 Total=£217.58
w/c 18th Feb: £6.500 -

Hi Guys!
Am just hoping for a quick bit of advice, please.
IO know how much Barclays have charged me on both of my accounts, over the last 6 years. Now do I write them a letter saying basically 'you've illegally charged me £400 and I'd like it back' and that's it, or do I send a list of all the dates they've charged me etc and work out the interest and say 'You've illegally charged me £400, I'd like it back along with £(I have to work out the interest here)?
Many thanks0 -

You have to be a little bit more legal than that.
There is a site called consumer action group which gives you a step by step guide exactly how to do this .It also has the letters that you can print off and send to the bankIf you dont ask you dont get!!0 -

melsuggett wrote:Does this apply to overdraft charges too? I get charged £25 by HSBC everytime i go into my unauthroised overdraft (even by 1p!) for even 1 day - adding up to quite a bit everytime it happens! However, I have discovered that if I go over and stay there - I only get charged £25 once even if it is hundreds over!
Anyway, are these charges on overdrafts reclaimable?
Thanks
mel
Hi there,
Yes these charges are reclaimable, for up to 6 years
I would just like to add I work for HSBC and they do not charge if you exceed your agreed overdraft by anything up to £10. If you exceed the limit between £10 and £25 then you will be charged the amount you went over by. Anything above £25 then you will be charged £25 for each occasion up to a maximum of £125. I just wanted to point this out as the information you provided is incorrect
I agree that you should claim and I am in the process of doing so with the Halifax as they once charged me a total of £75 for going 50p over my limit and returning dd's etc
I couldn't tell you what HSBC's standing on claiming charges back is as thats something that I am not involved with, so please don't ask as I have no 'insider' information
