A question about this board, and the BG's.

MSE has the 10th most popular social networking forum in the UK. That thread discussions go all over the place during their lifetimes is unavoidable, it's the nature of the beast. Posters are at all intellectual abilities, some may not realise their opinion is superfluous......................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Frugalista....thank you. You have managed, in a coherent and calm way - (in all of your posts on the subject, not just the above post) to say exactly what I was trying to get across, but failed miserably.
I did not think for one moment, before I posted about a gadget connected to breeding, that it would cause hackles to rise on this board. Yes, there are plenty other forums which probably would give me better advice on MateTel, but I have looked on quite a few.... and have not come across many people who have actually used it. All I could find really is testimonials from the product site, which of course, would be good. I really didn't need to be told to look on other sites...(where the cost of the gadget might not have been so important to a bigger breeder for instance) I felt this was a little patronising, and now of course, it has been admitted that I was being told this, however altruistic the motive, because people have been hassled and abused in the past.
As I have posted on MSE on quite a few subjects and received excellent advice, I just was sitting here, with a window open in eBay, with finger hovering over the bid button and wondering if it was worth spending thirty five quid on. I thought perhaps someone here would have tried it, as there are so many pet posts. After all, loads of people helped me out with my coffee machine.
Anyway. How wrong can you be about people...and some people in particular.
Sad really.Life.

I think we have a board where most dont breed, because anyone dare open their mouths about breeding on here is chased off in no uncertain terms.
And if I remember correctly the thread in question was nothing to do with the morals or how toos of breeding
For the record, I dont encourage anyone to breed from their pets, but Im also the owner of a pedigree dog, have only owned pedigree dogs in the past and can accept that breeding is a necessity when people like myself choose a certain breed above others

I'm sorry but I have to disagree - I don't think people are abused nor "chased off". People are allowed their own views SO LONG as they are expressed in a non abusive manner - I think generally any outright attacks are discouraged and that any "ruffled feathers" get calmed where possible.
However this isn't a moderated forum (as it clearly states at the top of the page!) and that means at times that unless people press the button to let Abuse know then they have no hope of addressing it. The BGs can't physically read every thread - the size of the forum simply prevents that. I usually try to skim most of the posts but that isn't always possible with work commitments on top.
I of course trust that if anyone has seen posts that are abusive that they have reported them?DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

'Tis a problem. Different people have different tolerance levels for different kinds of abusive content in posts. Who's to judge? How can it be confidently judged ? I have absolutely no idea, but think the present system works pretty well and clearly to the satisfaction of the site owner......................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Yes they are allowed their own views provided their views agree with you and a few others who patrol this pet board  Same with training and feeding, I wonder how people managed in the not so distant past without dog trainers and worse still those trying to get into the mind of a dog!
One of the funniest posts I read here stated, quite categorically, that all dogs should be neutered, I wonder how we Brits will survive without our pets when this is brought into force.0 -
It would be nice if people who do have the same thoughts on responsible breeding would be allowed to post here in peace. There are all sorts of money saving issues to do with breeding and pedigree dogs that many could benefit from....someone else mentioned that this is one of the biggest discussion forums in the UK...and yet, this subject apears to be taboo.
As I said in my earlier post, responsible breeders are not the cause of animal overpopulation problems. To say that when a person buys a pet from a breeder, that means one less home for a shelter animal is not to see the whole picture. There will always be people who would chose a pedigree puppy over an adult rescue mixed breed dog or puppy. That is not a crime - it's just personal choice surely.
As a breeder, sometime I think I care too much about my dogs.
The people to blame for animal overpopulation are those dog owners who don't give enough thought to having a pet. They don't care enough about their dog...people who are not spaying or neutering, allowing unwanted litters to be produced, irresponsible pet owners who let their dogs roam the streets, and who kick them out onto the street when their carpets smell, or when the first baby comes along. These are the people who need to be educated...not dog breeders.
The thoughts of many on here do not reflect the difference between responsible breeders and backyard breeders and puppy mills, and the views of many in my opinon, is extremely black and white.Life.

I think what it comes down to is that most people on this board feel that its far better to make a start rehoming the thousands of unwanted dogs before you start breeding more. A majority of the people on this board feel that way hence your responses. I am sure there are message boards on the internet for breeders who would be able to help you more that you will here.
Your just have to accept that most people on this board have concerns over breeding of dogs and any posts concerning breeding are going to be met with the same response. You can post all you want in favour of breeding and try and shift the blame but its not going to change peoples view.0 -
If you want to discuss breeding I am surprised you do not have contacts in the breeding world and would need to come on here and ask for advice?
Do you actually breed at the moment? - I ask because I seem to remember reading that you have to keep your dogs in the kitchen because they smell... a litter of pups paddling poop and wee everywhere is far smellier than adult dogs!!
This is an open forum, and I am afraid you will find many people do not currently think breeding is a good idea, either for the breeders (some litters of pups are going unsold at the moment, and are being handed over to rescue after failed attempts at selling) and for the pups (not enough good homes and unprecedented numbers of pups and dogs being dumped) as well as for the dogs currently in rescue.
Many responsible breeders have temporarily suspended breeding for this very reason, and to ignore the current financial climate is probably unwise.
I know many breeders do not believe their pedigree pups will be dumped, but this recent article shows sadly this is not the case ...

Record numbers of unwanted animals in only the first month of 2009
The Mayhew Animal Home is releasing its January figures for unwanted dog enquiries to highlight the growth in a ‘throwaway’ attitude to animal ownership.
Animal Home overwhelmed with calls from owners no longer wanting their dogs
In the first month of 2009, The Mayhew’s Dog Adoption Officer received 162 calls about dogs that owners no longer want -126 of these being pure breeds of dogs – dispelling the myth that people don’t abandon, or give up, pure breed dogs.
ls from the London area consists of a list of 36 different breeds of dogs, including Pugs, Schnauzer, Border Collies, Labradors, Spaniels, Pointers, Greyhounds and Great Danes.
The top reason given was that the owner simply ‘didn’t want’ the dog anymore, followed by ‘landlord won’t allow’, ‘new baby’, or ‘can’t afford’.
With a contract for strays with Brent Council and a maximum space for 35 dogs, The Mayhew was only able to take in 9 of these dogs and are working to advise some of the other owners as to their options.
The Mayhew Dog Adoption Officer, Lisa Guiney, said: “These figures are alarming and indicate clearly how the over-population of dogs in the UK means that people view them as disposable as it is so easy to obtain another one from numerous sources. To be this busy in only the first month of a new year is a shocking reflection of society’s attitude to animal ownership.”
The Mayhew Animal Home carries out early-age neutering in their community clinic and offers free neutering for any bull breeds by appointment in order to stem the over-population crisis in the UK.
The Mayhew CEO, Caroline Yates, said: “We would encourage anyone who is thinking of getting a dog to consider carefully the commitment of time and finances that this involves. And recommend that they visit their local rescue centre. It is understandable that people’s circumstances may change but pet owners need to plan ahead for these kind of incidences so that they can take into account the welfare of their pet.”0
