Do I really need to shower/bath EVERY day??

Options
I've been really thinking seriously about cutting energy costs. I was talking to my sister the other day - their boiler had conked out, they had no hot water - I. said that's OK as your shower is electric. She replied that she didn't shower every day anyway. This really got me thinking. I have always showered daily as a matter of course, but is it really necessary? Would alternate days and a good wash do instead? I am 'early retired' and wear clean clothes every day. Especially in winter (hot weather is a diff.
matter) would I be considered dirty if I didn't shower every day?
What do you MSE'ers think/do?

I shower every day. I do as part of my evening routine it helps me to relax.
I shower and put on my comfortable clothing and settle down to watch television or read with a glass of wine.

I like to have a shower every morning, as it helps wake me up!!!! Only takes a couple of minutes, and i feel clean the rest of the day. I suppose as long as you are washing, it doesnt matter if you are under the shower or using a flannel in the sink!!!!

    I shower everyday too. I personally wouldn't feel clean if I didn't.

When I shower I have to wash my hair as it gets wet, and my hairdresser told me to wash every other day maximum, so I have a shower one day, then a strip wash the next.

I'd prefer to shower every day but you don't HAVE to to be clean and fresh.

I used to have a friend who 'bathed' as he called it no more than twice a week!!

I shower every morning, if I'm running late then I may skip the shower and have a bath that evening, I just don't feel clean otherwise. I also wash my hair everyday - can't stand it otherwise

  • I quite frequently only shower every other day - like skintchick, I only wash my hair every other day so it's more convenient. I shower every day in summer, but in cooler weather I find that if I've been wearing well-ventilated fabrics and sleeping in relatively fresh bedclothes I don't notice the difference if I go a day without showering.

Any less frequently than that is a no-no - my dad used to have a bath once a week and not use deodorant  and it was when he changed his ways that my mum realised he was having an affair

I know Pooky! but my hairdresser said cos I then have to blowdry it I am killing it. At first it was sooooo hard to leave it that extra day, but as I am not stripping it of its oils any more, it has finally realised that and stopped producing so much!! Years ago I used to wash my hair once a week!! And I smoked then!! Yuck.

We don't have a shower and our bath takes forever to run so it's a bath twice a week and a good strip wash (all over) every day with a sink of hot water, shower gel and one of those wash scrub thingies here I'm afraid. I don't think I smell though. We keep talking about having a shower installed but at £600 for the shower and installation I think it will have to wait a little while longer.

i was lectured by my hairdresser about washing my hair too often - she told me to only do it once a week! it's quite thick and on the dry side, so it doesn't get nasty and greasy. bring on the smoking ban so that i can go out and not come back with smelly hair!

I shower every day, sometimes at home in the mornings but more often at work after I've gone for a run or a swim. If I don't shower in the mornings and haven't at work then I usually do in the evening as I tend to feel a bit dirty, and my hair feels horrible if I don't wash it every day.
The shower at work is so much nicer than the electric one in my freezing bathroom at home, so I prefer to shower there if I can. I guess that is saving our energy costs at home...
