i really enjoy jumping on the computer soon as i get home with new books to see where i'll be selling them and for how much
i need more hobbies :rotfl:
well my sales have been slow but steady, selling 1-2 per week but seeing as i only have 50 items on right now that's not too bad
i shall be getting £100 to spend from dh's next grant cheque as a boost for the business so i'll be hitting the boot sales and i think i'm going to chance an auction too! (moving up eh, i'll be posh like soolin' :rotfl: )
i'm hoping my ebay sales will pick up as i've just listed a bunch of stuff... still sooo much more to list but dd is jealous of the computer, she doesn't seem to understand that i have to be on the computer to keep her in videos and kiwis (i swear she'd be a plague of locusts in new zealand, honestly she's eaten 6 today  ) oh well, she goes to school in august, i live in hope :rolleyes:founder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
Any advice for selling vhs video tapes - movies, tv comedies etc? Is Amazon a good place - otherwise I'm trempted just to take them down the charity shop.0

Just an update from me
I have found out that my library sells there books of cheap 20p - £1 :j (I am going to clean there shelf’s this week)
Still need to phone the charity shops to see if they sell books of cheap
Now for one more question:
When you say that you are going to go to the auction or going to give it a try how do you now what they are selling? And how do you find auctions in my local area?
I think a auction would be great hopefully cheap stuff and a great buzz biding :j
Any help will be great thanks nutty0 -
The auction I go to has a viewing day the day before the auction so you can see the lots close up and work out what is worth going for and what is not. I think most auctions will be like that.
It's very time consuming though, last time I spent nearly 6 hours at the auction, so be prepared.

soolin wrote:I try to sort my buys quite quickly otherwise I would soon be buried here. Last week after the auction I spent half the next day listing items (some on ebay but most on Amazon) then took any that weren't worth keeping straight to the charity shop. That gives me room to buy another lot in a few weeks time!

And my stupid phone is refusing to connect to the computer for the photos! The phone says it's connected, but the computer says it isn't.Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

thanks for the tip about the wait soolin! i think the first time i'll go ahead and just go, for the experience but until dd starts school i think it would be unfair of me to expect her to suffer through all that so i'll just leave bids...
question about that though... let's say a box of books would have sold at £5, that's where it was petering out at but i said i'd pay £8... do i get it for just over £5 (like ebay) or do they charge me the £8?
as for where to find auctions, i did a google search and found plenty. i also foolishly signed up for a gov't auctions magazine thing (what a waste of money, the guy waffles on about all kinds of crap and makes himself sound important and i found everything he gave me on google! )
anyway, if you tell me what area you're in i can tell you some names and phone numbers where there auctions... you'll need to tell me the surrounding areas you're willing to travel to though, i dont' know much about english geography (i'm an american expat) though if you're in scotland i'd fare betterthis offer is for everyone by the way

soolin wrote:Under the new pricing by proprotion the cost of the postage takes into account the thickness of an item and its outer dimensions, it will no longer be dependent purely on weight. A lot of smaller items that currently go in the letter rate band will now be parcels with a hefty increase in costs for the lighter items.
Incidentally, this whole price increase thing has become complicated because there are two price increases coming into effect this year. The first increase in April will be just on the current system with all postal prices increasing. The second change, which is the worrying one for book sellers, will be in August when pricing by proportion comes in.
Interestingly the current standard size of envelopes that I assume many of us use are actually a few millimetre into the 'next' price band in each case. I'm not sure I can explain that properly, but it was picked up by the consumer magazines that for instance if a package needs to be below 100x 120 to qualify for a certain price slot, the envelopes sold are actually 105x 125 so would automatically be in the next rate band.

Thanks Soo, I'll copy that reply for when my brain's working better
I was going to look at buying bigger Jiffy bags, or smaller books, but seems like that's not the way forward either? Time to offload any non-standard sized books I think.

Hol, using your example you'd get the box of books for £5 but it's always been a bit of a niggle with me that you have to take it on trust that they don't take bids off the wall to get closer to your bid limit, particularly if you'd put a really high bid in for something and the room went quiet at a much lower figure, it must be so tempting for an auctioneer to nudge the bids higher knowing that there is a really good bid on the book0 -
Hi
Thanks for the tips
HOLsale I could do with that I am in the north west of England if you could help it would be great
Dose anyone no of any auctions in this area? every auction i seem to find are selling really old books (Antiques) or is this what people are selling0 -
Back to the bidding questions, you'll pick it up as you go along. However, 'my' auction (doesn't that make me sound important!) tends to move very quickly, 180 lots an hour so you must pay attention.
Books are usually started at £5 a box and often go to the first person to raise their paddle, it seems that a lot of people will only pay that so if they miss that first bid they won't put in an opposing bid. If it doesn't sell at £5 then the lot is usually withdrawn, occasionally a lower bid will be offered that the auctioneer may or may not accept and start bidding from.
I don;t think the auctioneer bids off the wall at all, if he has bids on the book he will start at the minimum he will accept and bid against people on the floor until he wins or his book reserve runs out. He also has a minimum price and will often say that if no one raises a paddle for say a £30 bid the lot will be withdrawn, that happens quite a bit.
