That is what I meant - the PiP. i was thinking that a key element for me is how thick the books are. I mainly use D/1s so if the package is thicker than 25mm then I will lose out. Time to get measuring!

This might sound like a 'blonde' question Mr_Clingford ;), but will you lose out because you'll have to buy different bubble bags, or because the book might weigh a teeny bit more?

Hi I sold my first book on Amazon a month or 2 back I found that the fees was a bit high but I still maid some money. :j

I want to get into selling books a lot more as I enjoyed listing and selling my book.

    So here are my questions:

Should I use Amazon eBay or both?

That’s one thing I want to no what people think is best. But the main thing I really want to no is now I have come to buy books.

Were do you buy your books?

Were I am thinking of buying books at:

Charity shops / car boot sale / school fair / friends and family / local papers

People selling boxes of books I have found a person (in local paper) saying they have thousands of books but is this person or people like this just getting rid of the stuff they can’t sell on eBay/Amazon.? Also is this the same with people selling 50 100 books? Or am I being paranoid :o

And do you have and tips for picking a good book out or do you just have to get to no what sells?

    Many thanks nutty

I have 3 amazon feedbacks only, yesterday's has knocked my feedback down to 67%. The buyers coplaint is that "the book is an older edition than the one expected but the book was readable". However the ISBN and search show it to be a 1983 edition, the only other year it was published is 1973. It was accurately described, creased spine, tanned pages etc so this hasn't been mentioned, just its age which comes up when you do a search for the book. Is there anyway I can put these details with my bad feedback?
I love this board, have "virtually" met so many lovely people, people I am honoured to count as friends.

Under the new pricing by proprotion the cost of the postage takes into account the thickness of an item and its outer dimensions, it will no longer be dependent purely on weight. A lot of smaller items that currently go in the letter rate band will now be parcels with a hefty increase in costs for the lighter items.

Incidentally, this whole price increase thing has become complicated because there are two price increases coming into effect this year. The first increase in April will be just on the current system with all postal prices increasing. The second change, which is the worrying one for book sellers, will be in August when pricing by proportion comes in.

Interestingly the current standard size of envelopes that I assume many of us use are actually a few millimetre into the 'next' price band in each case. I'm not sure I can explain that properly, but it was picked up by the consumer magazines that for instance if a package needs to be below 100x 120 to qualify for a certain price slot, the envelopes sold are actually 105x 125 so would automatically be in the next rate band.

Hi guys I need your words of wisdom please read my above post and see if you can help me with my questions.

My main question is that I have found someone in my local paper saying that they are selling thousands of books but is this there books that they can’t sell on eBay Amazon?
Or is there no way of knowing?

    thanks nutty

nutty, without knowing the isbn numbers of the books you have no way of knowing whether they are likely to sell on Amazon. From my own experience though fiction is rarely a good seller so I tend to stick with non fiction.

If you were planning to buy in bulk you really need to be brave enough to have a look at the books, possibly copy down a few of the isbn numbers in each batch and look them up before committing to buy.

I buy in bulk, not hundreds though, possibly each box has only 40 books in it. I usually plan on listing 10-15 from each box and taking the rest to a charity shop.

Becky yes you can leave your own feedback to explain what happened. If you get into all the feedback page, it has a box to press "leave your own feedback"
and you can put your own comments. This happened to me but was a complaint that delivery was slow (during Christmas week! though I had sent it immediately) - it is gutting. You need to get it next to the unfair comment as ap.

  • Hi Nutty, sorry for not getting to you sooner. I've been trying not to wander around MSE because I'm supposed to be listing on ebay - I have problems getting down to it and concentrating, I find that I have these really interesting work avoidance schemes like re-arranging my computer music playlists etc and MSE is just a nightmare if I get reading and posting...

I'll see what questions I can answer

I only list books on amazon because it just suits me better there are some sellers here that use both

I buy books where ever I see them so long as they are cheap and look smart and looked after, this is mainly charity shops, school fairs and boot sales

I'd be very wary of someone selling a lot of books unless you are very confident and can sit and look through them watching out for all the usual pitfalls like highlighted or written on pages or book club editions etc. Also you may have to take them all and the good ones may be overshadowed by the ones that won't sell. There really is no way of knowing if the book you are considering buying is a good'un until you can search it on Amazon, you eventually get a gut feeling but it's not foolproof

From previous posts on here, I think that if you are left feedback which you are able to prove to Amazon is unfair, it is worth emailing them as they have been known to remove it.
