I thought this thread was a joke(but it is not April fools day)

It seems to me ecoed that you simply don't understand electrical consumption and you called someone naive!!

The power supply rating on your laptop is meaningless as a guide to it's consumption.

I replaced the unserviceable 400 watt power supply on my PC with a 500watt one - doesn't use any more power.

    Question for ecoed.

Freezer A has a compressor rated at 500 Watts.

Freezer B(same capacity) has a compressor rated at 400 watts.

Which freezer is the most economical?

Tumble dryer A is rated at 2000watts Tumble dryer B at 3000watts - which is the most economical.

The wattage rating on every electrical appliance that has variable power or a thermostat is absolutely no guide to its consumption - and that is virtually everything.

So your idea would be useless for Fridge, freezer, washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, iron, hoover, PCs, printers, heaters, ovens, microwaves, electric hobs etc etc.

Now just think about your response please and come up with a good reason how it would save money.

I am going to assume this is not a wind up! and you really don't know the tie up between Volts, Amps and Watts.

Your petition refers to consumption. Electrical consumption is measured in Watts

A device running on a 12 volt supply and drawing 2 amps current will be using 24 Watts.

Let us take something like a washing machine. It is designed to work in UK on 240 to 250 volts and will use, say, 12 amps, so is rated at 3000 watts.

However that high wattage rating is because of the heater, most of the time the heater is not required and the pump will be using less than 1 amp i.e less than 240 watts.
So what would your labeling of Volts and Amps prove?

Now take your laptop that has a label saying 18.5v 3.9amps.

This means that it could use up to 72.15 Watts, however that is absolutely no indication of the Watts(consumption) it will use. Most of the time it will probably be around 25Watts and the extra capacity is mainly for running external devices(hard drives, webcams etc)

My laptop might be rated at 19v 6.2 amps and be more economical than yours, or 16v 2.5amps and be less economical than yours.

If this is a wind up - you have succeded!!!!

The night is still young where I am, so just going out.

Incidentally we use 115volts here. So this must mean my appliances are much more economical than home in UK;)

Lets all spend a fortune on new electrical items that will still use the same amount of electricity anyway then also spend £1000s on getting solar panels and batteries etc fitted.

All that cost willl save you "£100s"

As you keep saying ecoed, this is a moneysaving site, I just dont agree with spending £1000s to save £100s and I doubt the majority of other forum users would either.

I thought you didn't understand the term 'Watt' as a measure of electrical consumption.

In case you don't realise it, 1kW is 1,000 Watts!

Does a 240V device use more electricity than the same device designed to run off 120V?
No. The electric company charges you for watt-hours, not volts, and the wattage is the same. To figure volts you use the fomula V x Amps = Watts. A device that uses twice as many volts will use half as many amps, so the wattage will be the same -- and so will the cost.
