You say I'm wrong but dont say how, tell me the answer to my question instead of asking another.

Will a Hifi playing the radio at a low volume (or even through headphones) use the same electricity as THE SAME Hifi playing some hardcore house music on CD at full blast volume?

No I didnt, I knew it would

So how can putting a label on something saying how much it uses possibly be of any help when that use can vary so wildly depending on how the item is used??

    What is your previous answer?

All I see are misguided rants, your previous answer wasnt an answer at all, it was an irrelevent question about two different TVs

What label would you want to see on my Hifi that you yourself claim uses different amounts of electricity depending on how I use it?

How does the manufacturer/reatailer know what the end user is going to be doing with an electrical item?

I might go and blow thousands on a Bang and Olufson stereo and only listen to it through headphones, you could buy the same stereo and listen to everything on full volume using far more electricity, yet your label would just say "This product uses x amount of watts"

Your way of labeling just wouldnt work!

What a fantastic thread!! I now fully expect to be torn to bits for contributing but I fear I must.

This clearly displays how we are on a rocky road to ruin in this world and how no conciliation will ever come between 'passionate' Eco-Warriors and the logical and democratic minded parts of the population.

I've often said that protesters who chain themselves to railings and climb trees would be better off becoming politicians and in that sense, I have utmost respect for guys like Tommy Sheridan who has the balls to go in where it hurts for his cause. Lame petitions like this mean nothing and I suggest you get in touch with a local politician who will raise awareness at the appropriate parliament. Personally, I don't have anything that I feel so strongly about that would require the enlisting of a councillor or MP to assist, but rest assured, ecoed, if I had, I wouldn't waste valuable energy rattling on about it in a forum like this where the saving made at the point of purchase can far outweigh the saving made in the reduction of fuel consumption across the product's 'in-use' phase of it's life-cycle. And I certainly would take time to answer in a proper and far more courteous manner than you have to the very people I was at pains to have believe my propoganda. After all, most voters in this world don't take kindly to being told that they are idiots!!

In theory, your example of two appliances at the same settings but with different electrical set ups has some merit, but I believe the A-Rating, B-Rating system in place now covers most situations, and I really think that there are too many variables in the electronic/electrical appliance industry to nail down the specific data that you are after. I agree with other posters that this information would be vague at best and worthless on many products. Having PAT Tested for many years, I can tell you that the information you desire is normally always available on stickers or plates attached to the appliance and it is here that I can see plenty of room for improvement. I believe that volts, hertz, amps (also for plugtop purposes) and the maximum wattage should be clearly displayed ON the appliance and that this information should accompany the product description at point of sale. From here, it is purely a public awareness and education campaign that's required.

    Points to think about:

    1. Treat your 'future' eco-partners with respect.
    2. Understand who you are preaching to.
    3. Rethink your plan and come back and spell it out clearly.
    4. Think bigger and go directly to the source of change.
    5. Don't charge your laptop on the car (fag lighter>battery>alternator>car movement>engine running>fuel consumption!)

Cheers and all the best in your quest.
