I produce my own power via wind turbine and solar power. I have no domestic electricity. My power is stored in a bank of 12 volt batteries. Any electrical device that requires 12 volts or less i can power straight from the sourse. if electrical items require a higher voltage then i use an inverter..... with me so far??
so my learnered friend let me tell you the trouble we eco dwellers go through to try and find appropriate electrical devices.... take my laptop-- as you so kindly responded with this in mind.... well let me tell you, that had the information been available on the power requirements to run this 'energy beast' i would never have bought it.... so what??? you may say but, i'm on the front line of environmental living and the time wasted looking --in fact crawling behind the shelving units of large electrical retailers looking for the power transformers of the electrical items i want to purchase. where indeed the power consumption is written but only there is it written and not on the box nor in the users manual...
Can you not see... all electrical devices do not require the same power however they will give you the same performance...
PS... excuse me for being so passionate..........
oh and my friends laptop only needs 14 volts 2 amps....... it works great on my electricity system.

ecoed - stop typing and think for a minute. How can they possibly tell you the power consumption of these devices? It varies according to what you are doing.

Your laptop will use a lot more power playing a game than when web-browsing.

Your washing machine will use more power if you put 10 towels in it instead of a single t-shirt.

Your fridge will use a more power in summer than winter.

Fact is, the ABCD etc system allows a simple comparison of average power consumption between similar products, and that's the best you're going to get when no-one (not even the manufacturer) can possibly know how much power you're really going to use.

man what planet are you living on??? i am joking of course..... anyway my educated money savering expert.... do you really need me to explain the 1800 watt hair drier and other funny stuff your refering to lol.... dude... 1800 watts hahahaha thats more energy that my generator produces a bloody hair drier are you kidding???? this is marketing for the clones of this world.... 1800 watts crickey have you ever though that with a bit of tecnology they could produce a 100watt hair drier.... save the planet eh....lol.... if you could only hear your self 100 years from now....my you'd cry. History will show that we are a selfish creedy society..... if only the rest of the world could have a tumble drier..... volts +amps = ££££'s listen to yourself.....
oh and there's loads more passion yet on the subject.... lol..... ON A MISSION!!!!

Crikey mate... calm down, I am very passionate about saving energy... and money, but even if the cost to run the appliance was printed on the packaging, i.e. 1800 watt hair drier run for an hour at Avg 0.09p/ kWh costs 16 pence... for 5 minutes it will cost Avg 0.01p, is anybody gonna bother trying to find one that runs cheaper than that!!? if they are, they should be drying their hair with a TOWEL!!

    edit

by the way, all appliances already have the voltage and wattage / amps on the rating label...240V 2200W... Kettle but it will only use the full 2.2 kWh (£1.98) if on for a whole hour.. in which case it will probably have melted way before then...

So is this a case of sticking your head in the sand just because you've recently bought electrical goods.... helping fellow man eh?? As for saving you 100's on your bill I can....... buy a solar panel a 2 leisure batteries. then all of your electrical devices in your house that require 12 volts or less eg. home phone, mobile phone battery and camera chargers, wireless network, security lighting, door bell etc etc etc plug these items through a 12 plug and hay presto i've just saved you 100's on your future bills............ Think out of the box take some responsibility go green :)

Sorry but signing that petition will not save me "£100s" on my bills.

Even if the government act on putting that information on stuff, I have a new TV bought last year, Washing machine and tumble drier were bought the year before. So I'm unlikely to go out and buy a whole new set of appliances just because the wattage is displayed on them.

So how will signing that save me "£100s" as you put it?

Anyone buying a new appliance will probably save money thats true, I'd like to see some evidence of the £100s you talk about though.

are you aware of the carbon footprint of manufacturing and importing solar PV panels and Batteries?... Nope....? thought not!

I thought this thread was a joke(but it is not April fools day)

It seems to me ecoed that you simply don't understand electrical consumption and you called someone naive!!

The power supply rating on your laptop is meaningless as a guide to it's consumption.

I replaced the unserviceable 400 watt power supply on my PC with a 500watt one - doesn't use any more power.

    Question for ecoed.

Freezer A has a compressor rated at 500 Watts.

Freezer B(same capacity) has a compressor rated at 400 watts.

Which freezer is the most economical?

Tumble dryer A is rated at 2000watts Tumble dryer B at 3000watts - which is the most economical.

The wattage rating on every electrical appliance that has variable power or a thermostat is absolutely no guide to its consumption - and that is virtually everything.

So your idea would be useless for Fridge, freezer, washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, iron, hoover, PCs, printers, heaters, ovens, microwaves, electric hobs etc etc.

Now just think about your response please and come up with a good reason how it would save money.

I already have solar thermal panels, 4000 litre rainwater tank for flushing loos, 300% efficient air source heat pump boiler, CFL lights, loads of insulation, and very low bills, I am doing my bit....'B' rated house...if everybody started buying solar PV panels, Batteries and wind generators, getting these manufactured would in itself produce more carbon emmissions than they would save.
