i don't use bleach either, can't stand the stuff. I scrub it with an old scrubber I used for the dishes (had its day) with a little cif. Throw it away after and flush. Once a week I poor a litre of very cheap flat coke down the pan overnight to get rid of limescale. Costs 23p a bottle. Does a much better job than the other expensive limescale removers.

As for germs, well you don't eat off it do you - With my OH and a wee lad of 6 using it, I have to wipe it everyday and for this I use Tesco's own antibacterial wipes. Job done ;)

  • For really keen cheapness I'd be using a bit of kitchen-paper with some diluted disinfectant or even a bit of loo-roll. The idea of all those blessed wipes in the shops gets on my nerves in a way that I'm sure is petty of me but I just can't see the point of them.

I tried the cheap-cola-down-the-lav-overnight thing but all I ended up with in the morning was a brown-stained bowl. I've no idea where I went wrong: does it need to be the non-diet kind or what, do you think? I just had it hanging around as I don't drink the stuff myself so I've no intention of buying any specifically for lime-scale removal or anything.

my loo is 32 years old and its only ever had bleach chucked down it every night and, honestly its clean! havent had to faff around with newspaper, cotton wool, limescale remover, lemon juice etc..............perhaps I have a 'toilet angel' or perhaps the good old fashioned bleach actually WORKS?

I use stardrops and microfibre cloth with my hand down the loo. Far easier to clean and yes it is flushed clean before I start ;)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who cleans the loo by hand :D

I have a container kept specially for loo cleaning. I put in a squirt of washing up liquid, some soda crystals and a few drops of tea tree oil, with water as hot as I can stand it, then I get in there with a microfibre cloth (blue for the loo :rotfl:) and clean away. I like to have a very clean loo so I do the seat and the outside of the bowl too. The problem with just squirting bleach down is that the rest of the loo doesn't get cleaned.

I clean the loo with flash, use this for the whole bathroom but I put bleach in the toilet every morning before I go to work

If bath looks a bit manky I use Domestos spray to keep it nice and white as OH creates a tide mark and sometimes it isnt all removed with normal cleaner

my loo is about 90 years old, if not more and likes the taste of harpic.. our water is so hard it is practicaly solid.. quick squirt and leave overnight.. when we go away for the weekend I put a harpic tablet in to get rid of the remaining scale but I hate a dirty loo.. nothing worse if you need to vomit in a hurry.

A denture cleaning tablet overnight once a week, plus a squirt of bleach everynight. Before you ask - my teeth are all my own, just buy the denture tablets for purely toilet purposes.

We use bicarb of soda and it works a treat, either that or normal vinegar or cola.
