How do you clean a toilet?

I never heard of that problem and certainly never experienced it and I been around for quite a while, I suppose it is plausible but then some people also put silly things down the toilet and over time they get blockagesMy plumber told me NOT under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES to use any rim block things caged in plastic.
Presumably because they occasionally fall in and cause blockages...
anyway I use cif cream (but own brand) for scrubbing
wipe over daily (bits of old towel kept for loo only and washed, with the towels, hot wash once weekly) - just hot water and the towel
have a bleach block in the cistern (I use parazone - last a while and they are sometimes on offer)
and pour thick bleach (shops own brand) under the rim and down the bowl when I clean
I am in the process of teaching the kids (and myself) to put the lid down before flushing;)
If someone's 'ill' I spray with dettol aerosol can - and I spray the loo and all hard surfaces in the bathroom and find that 'iffy tummies' seem to be confined to the original sufferer but they are few and far between to be honest. But we also have our own towels which are washed in a very hot wash weekly.0 -
I just use bleach, and the occasional cistern block (usually parazone). As I have kids, I usually have some toilet wipes to hand.0

I also clean toilet out once in a while with bleach and occasionally with soda crystals its a very good cleaner even works on cleaning mould on pavements although never tried it. I also use that in the shower as every once in a while it blocks with hair0

I have used the caged rim ones for years without any problems of them falling in, but I do dislike them as they do seem to attract any bodily waste amongst other stuff - so hate having to clean the things.
The OH is snoring his head off at the minute, so will have to check with him later about using the in cistern ones, as I have got it in my head that they can't be used on toilets with a saniflo connected, and also I am sure I have read something about them causing problems with old pipes, which we have old pipes on 1 toilet and a saniflo on the other.
Thankfully we don't have a problem here with limescale. I might try doing the duck cleaner (or tesco value) a couple of times a day (instead of once) and use no rim block, see how it goes.0 -
well when we moved in here and I started putting the parazone blocks in the cistern I found loads and loads of black slime started to be flushed away - so presumably the bleach in the water was shifting the mould build up from out of the pipes. Having said that I have heard that they can cause problems with old pipework - as they shift the gunk I suppose little leaks could appear.
I've just had a new bathroom suite fitted though - and have used parazone cistern blocks since day 1 so hopefully that wont happen again!Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

My parents have ancient plumbing and the bleach blocks did result in a number of leaks when they tried them.
Soap and hot water will generally kill most germs... Bleach isn't necessary, certainly not on a daily basis. There are plenty of more environmentally sound disinfectants available, and vinegar works perfectly well for limescale. At the moment I scrub with a brush (horrible unhygienic things I know) which I regularly leave soaking in disinfectant in the loo overnight and then flush to rinse. Deep clean is done using dedicated gloves and cleaning cloths or rags on their last tour of duty... Cistern, then outside of lid, then inside of lid, then base, then inside of toilet. I usually use a surface cleaner or vinegar with tea tree or eucalyptus oil both of which are disinfectant.
As Valli says, keeping the lid down when flushing can help stop germs spreading as they're in the water droplets not necessarily on the surfaces.
BTW there are probably more nasties on your keyboard or phone than under your loo seat0 -
Crikey! Some of you are very keen cleaners. I toss a bit of bleach down my lav about once a fortnight. If I remember.0

I didn't say how often regularly wasbut I suspect those with kids (and particularly boys... Or even men) in the house may need to clean more frequently!
... I have just dusted mine, to give you an idea of how long it must be since it had a proper clean ...0 -
i use bleach down mine a few times a week, clean the top, sides, seat and inside seat/rim with antibac wipes
i used to use the duck disks mentioned but switched to the ones sold in poundland, do the same sort of job just packaging, outer is not as 'nice' as the duck ones
