How do you clean a toilet?

The smell of bleach makes me feel sick... plus it's all going in our water system.
I just use an eco cleaner and clean it weekly with the brush, keeps it shiny even in a hard water area.0 -
My lovely plumber says not as bleach is corrosive and can shorten the life of your loo, he is particularly scathing of the blue things.
He says quilted toilet roll was designed by plumbers to keep them in a job. LOL
Brush is most effective - brush, then flush with the brush still in to clean it. Use an eco-cleaner occasionally and leave brush in to soak/disinfect. Also the mop bucket down the loo with floor cleaner in it0 -
Brush and flush, yup, plus a pumice stone for limescale. You don't really need anything else. To wipe down the outside and the rim I use water + a drop of vinegar + washing up liquid/Stardrops on a rag, so you can give it a bit of a scrub. These wipes are useless for actually rubbing I think. The cleaning solution gets poured round the bowl when I've finished, left for five minutes then flushed. Don't use too much detergent though! Sometimes if I've been washing woolies I pour the soapy water down the loo to clean it. Waste not want not!Val.0

As the title says is there a cheaper alternative to using toilet limescale cleaners?
Keep your loo clean by brushing it often, and you'll have no need of any products
I'll add this to the Cleaning the Loo thread later, to keep ideas together.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
acid is good for limescale (vinegar, lemon juice, citric acid etc) - if the problem is above the waterline then then citric acid crystals are good as they will "stick" to a dampened surface. Otherwise you can make a runny paste with vinegar and a little flour, slap it on, leave for a few hours then dampen and scrub off0

Hope this is in the right place
In my attempts to save money/cut back on needless spending I am now looking at the loo (not literally lol!) I usually use the likes of Duck toilet cleaner as a daily cleaner (usually manage to get it on special) but I am going to try the Tesco Value one this week, at 24p it sounds a bargain and surely they all do the same job - just maybe smell a bit different or different colours.
But my question is regarding the rim block type things - with 3 males in the house (that seem incapable of cleaning the loo!) I did away with the caged rim blocks a couple of months ago - swapping to those Duck discs. I usually get them on special, but even so they are costing me a fortune, especially as youngest DS like to try and aim for itSo basically I want to know do I actually need to be spending money on these sorts of things? Surely the daily dose of toilet cleaner should be enough to keep it hygienic?
So what do you all do/use?0 -
I clean with toilet duck daily then a big squirt of limescale remover, clean the seat and rest of the pan with flushable Parazone toilet wipes and use another wipe to clean the flush button and door handle.#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

you could try these at 30p you can't really go wrong

I use Tesco, Sainsburys and Morrisons own budget cleaner for several years now and no problems I also use the toilet block than hangs over the edge of the bowl0

My plumber told me NOT under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES to use any rim block things caged in plastic.
Presumably because they occasionally fall in and cause blockages...
anyway I use cif cream (but own brand) for scrubbing
wipe over daily (bits of old towel kept for loo only and washed, with the towels, hot wash once weekly) - just hot water and the towel
have a bleach block in the cistern (I use parazone - last a while and they are sometimes on offer)
and pour thick bleach (shops own brand) under the rim and down the bowl when I clean
I am in the process of teaching the kids (and myself) to put the lid down before flushing;)
If someone's 'ill' I spray with dettol aerosol can - and I spray the loo and all hard surfaces in the bathroom and find that 'iffy tummies' seem to be confined to the original sufferer but they are few and far between to be honest. But we also have our own towels which are washed in a very hot wash weekly.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016
