When was the last time you heard of someone being ill or even dying as a result of being in a carpeted bathroom???

Judging by this thread there are quite a few worriers!

As for bleach, the fumes make me feel sick, bleach and all the other strong cleaners are probably doing a lot more harm to people's health than either a carpet or a loo brush! By the way I have tiles but even so if I liked carpet I'd have it.

I use an eco cleaner and loo brush once a week. I don't like to put strong chemical cleaners in the water system nor do I believe we need to be overly paranoid and use strong chemicals every second.

It doesn't work that way, it's not necessary that you spray the carpet every day. If you simply flush the toilet without shutting the lid, the bacteria in the toilet bowl turns into water droplets in the air and land on the carpet. The most dangerous forms of bacteria can last for three or four days on a carpet. Plus, it's virtually impossible to kill them once they are on a fabric except by washing it. Even so, they are not normally a threat to healthy individuals, but young children, the old, infirm, and pregnant women are put at greater risk. Some fecalform bacteria can cause miscariage.

Probably no one would ever know where these bacteria came from, and you'd never be able to track it down to one place. But that doesn't mean that the danger is 0.

I am not a worrier about germs. I am from a Third World country and I regularly visit India. When he was just a baby, I used to give my baby (18months) son to an Indian ayah (nanny) in a South Indian village, where he was treated just like the poor village children, and exposed to a multitude of germs. As a result he is practically immune to germs, and so am I! When we go to India we are not particlarly careful, but we never get sick.

So no, I am not worried abour germs or getting sick or dying. I just believe that urine collecting in a carpet can't be easily removed and in time will stink, and the only reason people tolerate it is because they can't actually see it (assuming the carpet is not white, but some other colour that hides the stain!).

It really is a question of what you are used to. If you grew up with carpeted toilets you will think it is normal, until someone says something and you think, Oh MY God! (Or not, as in some cases; some people don't mind.)

I am the same in other aspects; we keep our toothbrushes on a shelf just above the toilet and I never knew or thought about the spray that comes from flushing. I just read about it the other day, and it was Oh My God! And since then I close the toilet lid when flushing. (There is no other place to keep our toothbrushes, and obviously nobody ever thought of that "problem" when building it.) And I have requested my family to do the same.

I don't think anyone in my family is going to get ill or die from all the fecal germs that have landed on our toothbrushes over the years, but I now think it is disgusting. If someone doesn't think urine in carpets is disgusting, then that's their choice.

And by the way, there was already a discussion on carpets in bathrooms right here on MSE, and most posters to that thread seem to agree with me....

    ...But any ideas welcome!
What about leaving a pair of slippers or house shoes/crocs etc inside the door for him and have a "no shoes" rule in the house?

You should only brush your teeth in the bathroom if the cold water is plumbed into the mains. If it's from the storage tank you could have dead birds or rodents floating about up there and never know, not the best water to be rinsing your toothbrush under. I was told by a plumber to stop brushing our teeth in the bathroom so now we brush them in the kitchen.

and I can't believe you actually took the time and effort to post on here if you think its such a pointless thread???

Why are you having a go at me? I didn't use the word pointless, and at no time did I intimate that it was pointless. I merely stated that I didn't think it had anything to do with saving money, and that I was surprised so many people were prepared to share their toilet cleaning techniques. The fact that I too was prepared to share my toilet cleaning techniques does not mean I can't be surprised at people's behaviour, including my own. Where's the harm in that? Whereas you seem quite happy to question the reason for my post, which was actually quite a helpful one.
