i dont think there is any issue to do with the tv itself because upscaled dvds look fine and games on the xbox 360 look fine. i just didnt expect that kind of snowyness in backgrounds from sky hd. dont get me wrong its nothing really major, it doesnt spoil my viewing. its like i said i expected better.

It definitely looks like the TV settings to me. Try turning the brightness down until you can't see the "fuzziness" any more.

i will give it a go but the chances are the picture will be too dark then.

the brightness is at 47. one change we did that made a difference was change the hdmi black setting from normal to low.

numbers dont mean a thing as every tvs different

    'Black level' should be off

and regardless that the xbox etc looks fine, im 99% sure contrast and/or brightness is too high for sky (settings are 'source' dependant)

there are only two choices for the hdmi black level normal and low. i will write down all the settings on the tv later.

A properly set up TV can often look surprisingly dull at first. Really bright colourful pictures look nice in a store, but they can quickly become very fatiguing on the eyes.

it isnt set to showroom settings though. during the initial set up it gave us the choice between having showroom settings and home settings.

well here are the current settings.

mode can be dynamic, standard or movie. we have it set at standard.

settings on another menu are colour tone set at normal but can be cool2, cool1, warm1 or warm2. hdmi black level set at low but can also be normal. 100hz is off but can be low, medium or high.
on another menu black adjust is set to off but can be low, medium or high. dynamic contrast set at low but can be off, low, medium or high. gamma set at 0 but ranges from -3 to +3. colour space set at native but can also be auto or custom. flesh tone set at 0 but can be from -15 to +15. edge enhancement is turned off.

The movie mode is generally a good place to start on Samsung TVs. Set the colour tone to Warm 2, the black level to normal, the gamma to -2, the dynamic contrast off and the sharpness to 0 (yes, zero). HD pictures don't really need sharpening. If you're going to be using the same settings for SD material, you can add a bit of sharpening, but you need to turn it way down.
