Coincidences are odd, but what I found really odd was her promoting a Facebook group that she had started up and that was going to have a competition for a free Boots system. That I found reeked of promoting it. What bog standard consumer is really knowledgeable about a product unless they've used it for ages, and someone who's used it for ages is scarcely going to be so excited about it that they go to the effort of setting up a competition with a chance to win an item they already have.

If it is true that there have been some boots "imposters" on this thread then I think that is truly shocking. I bought the boots smooth skin on the back of people's reviews on the MSE forums, and the thought that some of those were just made up makes me really mad.

Having said that... I have been using the device for around 8 weeks now and I AM getting good results so I guess the fact that some other reviews are false doesn't change this. I am disappointed by the quality of the actual device though and the overheating problem is terrible. I am going to have to take my second machine back tomorrow as it has started to overheat and smell of burning plastic! I wonder how many it will take until I get one that doesn't feel like a red hot poker on my skin

And do you believe that is the best "promotion" some multi million organisation such as Boots could come up with?
    That would be very clumsy!

No you can't epilate because it removes the root of the hair and that's the part you are trying to zap.

oh btw, did u guys use it on the whole pubic area ? because i tried doing it i only did the top part i noticed that the pain gets more and more when i go down so i'm worried now because i heard that the more treatment you do the more the pain!!! is that true, or does it depends on the thickness of the hair

Agree, it seems clumsy. But maybe their marketing people are exploring new areas.
Companies are realising the power of user-led online communication, for example they contact high profile bloggers on tweeter and you tube, offering free products to review.
Some companies may be exploring how to influence online forums as well. You are probably aware that when a product/website is recommended on this forum their traffic/sales can really see a bit surge.
And the other way round for bad reviews.

It's not unusual for companies to have reps on online forums, for example BT respond to conplaints/queries on MSEs (officially).

Some may have used forums 'undercover' successfully to some extent, except that they may have underestimated users, and also the damage to their reputations if found out.....

It's a new-ish, expensive product and people had bad experiences with similar, earlier machines (eg Rio), so yes, even big companies hire marketing people to pose as genuine consumers and rave about how wonderful they are. It spreads interest and encourages people that it's okay to spend that much money as they are likely to have a good result.

Don't underestimate just how far marketing people will go in order to get people to buy their products - there are all kinds of psychological tricks in their arsenal. They rely on people believing that big companies would never do such a thing.

Okay, this is a fiction book, but if you want an enjoyably readable, rather shocking eye-opener on marketing practices, try reading "Pop Co" by Scarlett Thomas.

Their mistake was in not recruiting a better level of product pusher/raver.
*waits for forthcoming employment offers* :D

Believe it or not, I did actually receive an offer to do this last year on a skincare forum - not for Boots, but for a skincare product. I told them where to stick it.
