Thanks for the heads-up on the great offers that are around at the moment. I'm a huge fan of 'whoops' deals and have got great bargains lately - esp on Cauldron Foods falafel and Quorn cutlets. Since they can be frozen straight away it's great to buy them cheap from the chilled cabinet and pop them in the freezer as soon as I get home.

As for the earlier arguments. I've been veggie for 18years because I didn't like the taste of meat - not for any moral or dietary reason. Quorn is a great addition to the diet for some reasons but I certainly don't consider it a meat 'replacement'. I prefer Quorn mince to any other because it's a lot lower in fat than any other, same as their other products. The things covered in breadcrumbs aren't great for anyone watching their waistline!

I think making things from scratch is the best option for anyone (whether a meat eater or veggie) so it'd be a welcome change if supermarkets did better deals on vegetables than just on ready meals or processed goods! It's interesting to see the way prices of some goods - such as peppers - have changed recently. It's good to see that chickpeas are holding their price quite well :o)

Thanks for the hints and tips everyone - I'll be keeping my eyes out for more decent veggie offers and keep you posted :T

Have you any idea what a linguistic, logical and moral oxymoron the concept of "vegetarian meat" actually is? A total nonsense. And in my opinion (having been fed it under false pretences once), not worth eating even if starving.

There are so many DELICIOUS vegetarian foods from around the world, so why not have the courage of your convictions and discard the concept of meat altogether?

Another thought: what's the carbon footprint of this manufactured "food" versus (say) beans or pulses?

I should imagine the carbon footprint is substantially less then imported beans and pulses. Not everyone can eat beans (I certainly can't and then work!) - soya beans and lentils are imported aren't they? At the end of the day, so long as people aren't eating animals I dont think it matters what they eat, i.e. Quorn, it's a good standby and fussy kids will often eat it, some people go vegetarian for different reasons. I eat Quorn occasionally, yes it's not a natural food but I actually rather like it!

Thank you for your study and sense in pursuing this question carefully. I would like to respond, but am mindful of the users of this forum who only want information on a cheap deal at any price. In the interests of the stated purpose of the forum therefore, I suggest we drop the debate.

    Best

Great, I'm over in the states and Quorn goes on sale. I bet it runs out before I get back too. Oh well.

    Thanks any way.

I've been eating Quorn since it came out and I think it's great. The other week Asda didn't have the Quorn pieces so I bought their own chicken pieces. I rhought great, an added bonus was it was made in Israel making it kosher.

I put them into a little oil, sauteed for a few minutes, and went for a taste and was almost sick. If you want fake chicken that tastes like chicken and I mean really tastes like chicken then this is for you. I threw it out.

    Been a veggie since 1983.

Oh I am beside myself. I've been holding - BITING - my tongue over the comments posted since my last, but this takes the biscuit so to speak:

Let me get this straight. You disliked a product that described itself as "Chicken Pieces" because it tasted exactly like chicken? And for this you are happy to pay a premium price over other less contentious foods? I rest my case: nothing more need be said about this contribution.

My WHOLE point is that not only is it a nonsense (logical and ethical) to maintain a vegetarian stance while seeking out and using products that DESCRIBE themselves in meat terms, and also TASTE like the meats you say you won't eat for "ethical" reasons, but also a financial nonsense since they are MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE than some of the delicious vegetarian dishes found in all parts of the world. Look at the Quorn site - it uses meat terminology and the names of meats to promote its products.

This is surely not something that you can argue over. You want your "meat taste" but you don't want to kill animals - what the hell happens in your minds?

Carbon footprint is another issue - fair enough, it seems that premium grains often feed animals. This is a waste of food in an inefficient process to create cheaper meats. In the "west" we also eat far too much meat for our health. But I live and work in Wales - what else will you do with the thousands of hectares of grade 3 / 4 and 5 lands (mountains) that make up this country and the livelihoods of many of its farmers? It's going to be costly, in economic and human terms to force all those farmers to stop raising sheep. Or don't you think outside the box?

On the topic of nutrition, I eat meat and also like all sorts of other tasty, natural and healthy foods. I have a balanced diet that I don't need to supplement. It's interesting that one person above cites very healthy athletes - but I think this needs close attention and care to achieve. I know some vegetarians personally, and they are all sickly creatures. No evidence of course, just one possibly unrepresentative observation. Why make yourself ill with your "healthy food" - it costs you?

I expect, of course, howls of protest and censure for daring to have an alternative opinion to a mindset that allows no questioning or opposition ...

    And it's STILL about money.

When I saw this thread ran to four pages I knew that there would be more than just a discussion about the deal – it always happens when a Vegetarian (Quorn or McCartney’s) deal is posted. Someone like James_N appears and starts preaching to the converted.

James_N, what is your problem? Why do you feel the need to ‘educate’ me? Why are you so vehemently opposed to me making my own choice and eating what I want to eat?

    I find this sentence from your most recent post particularly objectionable;

“You want your "meat taste" but you don't want to kill animals - what the hell happens in your minds?”

I think you need to understand that everyone doesn’t think like you and there’s no point in getting angry and offensive just because they make a choice you can’t understand or don’t agree with.

“I expect, of course, howls of protest and censure for daring to have an alternative opinion to a mindset that allows no questioning or opposition ...”

You’re being over-dramatic and rather pompous. It’s no different to saying that preferring Pepsi to Coke is “daring to have an alternative opinion to a mindset that allows no questioning or opposition” It’s really not that important and not worth getting so worked up about. I put Quorn nuggets in my shopping trolley; you put chicken nuggets in yours. So what? It doesn’t bother me what you eat.

Maybe, but the reason I had a quiet giggle to myself when James_N started posting was because some of the vegetarians that I have encountered have been so sanctimonious, preaching all sorts of rubbish about killing animals being "wrong", so I loved the irony of that particular sort of vegetarian being called a hypocrite. Happy to dish out lectures to others, but not willing to take any themselves, perhaps?
At the end of the day, so long as people aren't eating animals I dont think it matters what they eat
    Anyone find that comment ironic?

    (Apologies for being off-topic)
