There are so many DELICIOUS vegetarian foods from around the world, so why not have the courage of your convictions and discard the concept of meat altogether?

I don't eat meat, and used to have this opinion until I was introduced to Quorn mince.
I'm allergic to garlic which is a vegetarian nightmare. I'd say about 80% of veggie meals contain garlic so I make a lot of meals from scratch using basic ingredients like veg and pulses.
I was introduced to Quorn about a year ago by a meat eater who told me it was much more versatile that 'eal mince. As with actual minced meat, it is what you do with the product that makes a meal out of it, and if you can't cook then you can't put Quorn to it's best us.

A couple of interesting Quorny facts:
It's naturally low in fat, low in calories and rich in fibre.
It is a good source of protein.
There have been numerous trials run on Quorn and nearly all have shown a significant reduction in cholesterol levels after four to eight weeks.
Unlike meat, Quorn has no saturated fat which causes high cholesterol.
Quorn's high fibre content also helps lower cholesterol levels.

For many vegetarians getting a low fat, high protein source of food is difficult.

My OH is allergic to garlic and i'm allergic to peppers. He eats meat, i don't. I find a lot of veggie meals contain peppers and a lot of chicken and potato wedges are coated in garlic seasoning. So we too make a lot of food from scratch. When i make bolognaise i use quorn mince for me and the real deal for my OH. I have found that Ragu "Traditional" sauce doesn't seem to contain garlic or peppers, so thats one off-the-shelf we can both enjoy! :o

Have you any idea what a linguistic, logical and moral oxymoron the concept of "vegetarian meat" actually is? /quote]
OCD:- *edible part of fruit, nuts, eggs etc; green ----, grass, green vegetables, as food; white ----2,(arch.)Food of any kind.

Our family love it so what are you getting so het up about. e.g. Quorn is `meat replacement`.
If you, as a meat eater, are consuming any processed `meat products` you may be eating as much as 70% of the `meat` as soya protein.
BTW we also eat pulses 2 - 3 or more times per week- including baked beans!

Another thought: what's the carbon footprint of this manufactured "food" versus (say) beans or pulses?

Most meat comes from outside UK, it may say `packaged in UK, but may come from Argentina or Botswana and meat uses 4 - 8 times the energy to produce weight for weight. Thus most purist vegetarians are less carbon intensive!
Vast swathes of rainforest etc. etc. etc., you have probably heard this before, however, 80% of soya bean harvest is used for animal feed.

The Quorn Pepper steaks are also half price in the chilled section.

FYI the ingredients in the quorn mince are Mycoprotein, free range egg and barley, no soya in sight as mycoprotein is a fungi.

Having been veggie for about 18 years, I would now only buy the Quorn products on offer because of the price tag. I used to love Quorn, when it was the best and almost only veggie offering at the supermarket, but I now much prefer the Realeat mince and own brand mince, chicken and beef pieces where available. As an earlier poster mentioned, it may be to do with what they are made of, but I also find the Quorn chicken pieces are never cut properly and I have to do it myself while cooking, which is really annoying.

I have recently started training for a half marathon, and started looking at my diet, to see if I was getting enough of the right things. I was a bit worried a vegetarian diet might leave me lacking, when asking a bit more of my body. A quick google of "vegetarian athletes" soon put my mind at rest. With champion olympians like Carl Lewis and Ed Moses living the veggie way, I don't really see how people can claim it is unhealthy.

I think the main point of the post that everyone objected to, was that world-wide there are a huge selection of more natural vegetarian alternatives that perhaps some vegetarians are unaware of, and that it can be difficult to see why people who choose not to eat meat, subsitute it with something that looks and tastes just like meat. His issue is not with vegetarianism as a whole, just with the somewhat narrowminded way some veggies are perceived to eat.

I for one will continue to cook meat alternatives at home because they are easy to buy from any supermarket, quick to cook (no need to defrost for hours), and simple to intergrate into any recipe that calls for the meat version. I don't have to worry about undercooking and poisoning people and very rarely have meat eaters had any issue with the meat alternatives. I also find it generally to be cheaper than real meat, so I consider it money saving as well. That's good enough for me!
  • i once knew a veggie who lived on toast:eek:
i prefer veg mince to meat tbh but sadly oh wont eat it:rolleyes:

I mentioned this earlier, it ended the 3rd March (had been on offer at that price for the past month) but is it still on now? the SEL defo said 3rd march yesterday, can anyone verify if its still on?

You suppose that "manufactured" food is automatically healthier or safer? Why?
I am suprised that a supporter of even slight vegetarian concepts should be so aggressive in bad-mouthing clearly put opinions.

It's "affect" by the way, with an A.

It's "surprised", by the way, with an "R".
