  • Right, overnight with most things unplugged the meter shows 2.02 kwh used.
I say most things as I couldn't unplug the washer without pulling it out so I left it in and I have just been informed that there are 2 van batteries on charge in the shed.
Missed a phone call this morning because they were unplugged and got up late because I turned the clock off lol

The fridge and freezers would have used a bit overnight along with battery charger so does this seem normal overnight usage ?

    Yes that is OK
  • 2.02kwh overnight :| You will have to do another test with everything apart from your fridge/freezers unplugged (including the shed) as the usage will depend on how big the van batteries are, how empty they were etc. My fridge / freezer thermostat kicks in probably once / twice an hour, for about 30 seconds, at which point it uses 600-700w, so that wouldnt account for over 1kWh usage I wouldnt think

My personal experience (using 45-50kWh a WEEK not a day) is that something (plural perhaps?) is being left on overnight normally by someone. Are you sure that bulb in the fire is just a bulb and doesnt turn on and light up to show you the fire is in use?

And please people stop talking about the oxygen tank / compressor / whatever, it uses next to nothing, the same as a mobile phone charger probably, I would think its stressful enough without having to think about how much electricity its using

When you got up, what did your Owl read (before you started switching on) and what does it read now?

I think it might. Although you can't do a straightforward calculation with fridges and freezers, there are three of them using roughly 3kwh over 24hours between them.

    3kwh / 24 hours * 9 hours overnight = 1.125kwh

I think you now need to look at things you plug in during the day. Also, you said earlier, you used 5kwh overnight - what was plugged in then that wasn't plugged in last night?

I wasn't first up but since the meter was read at 6am we have used another 4kwh , kettle has been on a few times, toaster, lights, tv for football roundup, computer on, have just put plug in in the oxygen ( hid it in the wardrobe lol )
but that is to satisfy myself.
New halogen oven on now for the sunday joint, should be a lot cheaper than the oven.
Owl reading .92 when thermostat kicks in on oven.

You shouldn't have used 4kwh in four hours with that lot. After all you're using less than one unit an hour even with the oven on.
  • Looking at my figures on my suppliers website and over the last year we use anything from 12kwh to 17kwh per day, thats 2 adults/2 kids with various tvs/videos/laptops going for hours and hours per day.
    Yours does seem excessive.

I've no idea how much a battery charger takes to run, overnight, on presumably trickle charge. But two seems a peculiar number.

Are these batteries being left on charge all the time and nobody's told you?
  • Have just done the daily read and have clocked up another 30.4 kwh.
I have a feeling that the oxygen does use more than 1p hour but will know more tonight although if it used £1.00 per hour it would have to be on but at least if I know what it uses I can allow for that ie if it uses 2kwh a day I am still using 28 av which is still high.
